YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies CBR for RTMP/RTMPS. Then check that your bitrate matches your codec, resolution and frame rate, and that your internet connection has enough sustained upload capacity. If OBS shows a stable connection but viewers still see buffering, investigate YouTube’s playback latency and the affected viewers’ devices rather than assuming VBR is the cause.
Why is my YouTube stream buffering after I changed OBS from CBR to VBR?
“Buffering” can describe two different problems: OBS struggling to send video to YouTube, or viewers’ playback pausing after YouTube has received the stream. The OBS-to-YouTube connection is the first thing to check because YouTube specifies CBR for live RTMP/RTMPS streams. Its VBR recommendations for uploaded videos concern a different workflow; they are not live-stream encoder settings.
Changing rate control may have coincided with the problem, but that alone does not establish its cause. OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection status, YouTube’s stream health, your configured bitrate and upload capacity help distinguish a sending problem from viewer-side playback buffering.
Should OBS use CBR or VBR for YouTube live streaming?
For a YouTube live stream using RTMP/RTMPS, use CBR. YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance lists “Bitrate encoding: CBR.” In OBS, open Settings > Output, select the output mode and streaming encoder settings you use, and set Rate Control to CBR. OBS labels can vary by version and encoder.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
After changing the setting, confirm your bitrate rather than assuming CBR by itself will resolve the issue. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on the codec, resolution and frame rate. The following H.264 figures are YouTube recommendations for live ingest, not guarantees that your connection can sustain them:
| H.264 stream format | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
Use the row matching your actual stream. If you use AV1 or H.265 rather than H.264, consult the matching codec row in YouTube’s live encoder settings; do not apply an H.264 figure by assumption.

How do I fix dropped frames in OBS when streaming to YouTube?
- Restore CBR. In OBS, go to Settings > Output and set the streaming encoder’s rate control to CBR. Check that you are changing the streaming output, not settings for a recording.
- Match the recommended bitrate. Confirm your codec, output resolution and frame rate, then compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s corresponding live-encoder recommendation. Treat it as a target for the ingest configuration, not proof that your connection can carry it.
- Allow upload headroom. YouTube recommends roughly 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream bitrate. Check sustained upload performance, not just download speed. Include the demands of any backup stream, other people or devices sharing the connection, and normal network variation. A speed test is a snapshot; it does not guarantee uninterrupted capacity during a broadcast.
- Check OBS’s network indicators. Watch the dropped-frame counter and connection state in OBS while streaming. OBS Project explains: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” Rising network drops or intermittent disconnections point to the connection or an unsustainable bitrate; they do not prove that VBR alone caused the problem.
- Reduce bitrate if network drops continue. OBS recommends lowering the video bitrate as a first adjustment when the connection cannot sustain the configured rate. Reassess stability after changing it; a lower bitrate may mean choosing a lower resolution or frame rate as well.
- Test wired networking if you use Wi-Fi. OBS identifies Wi-Fi as a possible source of instability and recommends a wired connection. If practical, test Ethernet. It may help isolate a wireless issue, but it cannot fix every cause.
- Review other network causes. OBS lists VPNs, security software, network-prioritization software, old drivers, and router or modem issues among possible causes. Change or test one factor at a time where practical so you can tell whether stability changes.
- Test before the next event. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test using motion and audio similar to the planned stream. Monitor OBS and YouTube stream health during the test; a static screen may not expose issues that appear with more demanding content.
What if OBS is stable but viewers still see buffering?
If OBS reports a stable connection and YouTube stream health does not show an ingest problem, the symptom may be on the playback side. YouTube notes that lower stream latency can increase playback buffering. Check the stream’s latency mode in YouTube’s live-stream settings and compare reports across viewers and devices before changing encoder settings again.
- Ask whether the buffering affects everyone or only particular viewers.
- Record the affected device, app or browser, playback quality and approximate time.
- Note whether the broadcaster’s preview buffers too, or whether only viewers report a problem.
- Compare those reports with OBS’s dropped frames and YouTube’s stream-health information from the same period.
This evidence helps separate an ingest interruption from a viewer’s playback conditions. Without it, the title alone cannot identify the cause.
