These five distinctive places offer a different way to experience Australia, from ancient sandstone formations to island wildlife and a historic coal seam that still smoulders underground. “Lesser-known” here is a curated description, not a verified ranking: there are no comparable visitor figures establishing that these are Australia’s least-visited landmarks. They are spread across the country, and some require careful planning because of seasonal closures, remote access or guided-only entry.
1. Purnululu National Park and the Bungle Bungle Range, Western Australia
In the Kimberley, Purnululu’s banded, beehive-shaped sandstone towers rise from a remote wilderness of almost 240,000 hectares. The Australian Government’s heritage description says the formations, which can reach 250 metres, were eroded over roughly 20 million years. These are geological estimates and landscape measurements, not visitor statistics. Australian Government heritage information
Remoteness is part of the appeal, but it also makes access a central part of the trip. The government page gives a broad closure period from December to the beginning of April. Check with the park manager for current access, road conditions and seasonal arrangements before setting out; the published closure window should not be treated as a live access alert.
2. Burning Mountain Nature Reserve, New South Wales
Burning Mountain is known for Australia’s only naturally burning coal seam. NSW National Parks says it has smouldered beneath the surface for an estimated 5,500 years. An information-panel walk leads visitors through the reserve on a 4 km return route, making this an accessible way to encounter an unusual geological feature. The reserve is ordinarily open, but poor weather or fire danger can prompt closures. Check current alerts before travelling, and bring water and sturdy shoes. NSW National Parks also recommends binoculars for visitors interested in birdwatching; they are an optional extra, not a requirement.
3. Wilpena Pound, Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, South Australia
Wilpena Pound is a natural amphitheatre set in the outback landscape of the Flinders Ranges. Tourism Australia describes the broader landscape as more than 600 million years old and points to rocky gorges, wildlife, scenic roads, walking trails and scenic flights. That age is the figure in Tourism Australia’s landscape description, rather than a date for a single rock or landmark. Tourism Australia: Flinders Ranges and outback
