Jash Sen’s selection for Scroll.in, published April 25, 2015, spans films released from 1957 to 1994. It is a personal viewing list, not an exhaustive catalogue—and its choices celebrate books in different ways rather than all singing about them directly.
1. “Jaane Woh Kaise” — Pyaasa (1957)
In Jash Sen’s reading, this is the list’s most direct connection between books and a writer’s life. Pyaasa follows an unpublished poet yearning for recognition as a poet as well as romantic fulfillment. Books frame the heartbreak, while the audience’s response to the song sharpens the question of whether his work will be heard. Sen writes, “No film captures the heartbreak of being an unsuccessful writer the way Pyaasa does.” That is her critical judgment of the film, not a statement from a filmmaker or performer.
2. “Mere Sapnon Ki Rani” — Aradhana (1969)
As Sharmila Tagore reads in the window seat of the Darjeeling toy train, Rajesh Khanna serenades her. Sen identifies the book as Alistair MacLean’s When Eight Bells Toll, calling it an early example of product placement. The scene gives the novel a memorable place in the image, though Tagore reads only briefly and the book also serves as a visual prop. It is the only specifically named physical book among these five sequences.
3. “Chupke Chupke Chal di Purwaiya” — Chupke Chupke (1975)
The academic books here belong to a comedy about two professors. Jaya Bhaduri clutches a Botany book while singing; Amitabh Bachchan’s character, posing as a Botany professor, leafs through a syllabus text as he tries to impress her. Sen also points to the well-thumbed English and Bengali literature on his desk. Rather than relying on a single bookish backdrop, the scene folds scholarly reading into the comic courtship.

4. “Tum ko Dekha to Ye Khayal Aaya” — Saath Saath (1982)
Farooque Shaikh and Deepti Naval sing in a college library, among catalogued shelves. They look at one another through gaps in the books, turning the library into part of the courtship rather than making any particular publication the focus. Its bookish quality comes from the setting and the way the shelves shape the scene.
5. “Rooth Na Jaana” — 1942 A Love Story (1994)
Sen highlights the library’s hardbacks and colonial architecture, as well as a courtship staged from opposite sides of a bookshelf. Here the books are not tied to a named title or a writer’s story; their arrangement creates the visual grammar of the romance. The library itself becomes the scene’s defining presence.
