The list comes from a 2015 account of shops around Church Street and Brigade Road; “only in Bangalore” is best read as a celebration of local character, not a claim that similar shops exist nowhere else. Details about stock and policies in that account are historical, so check with a shop before making a special trip.

These descriptions reflect Scroll’s reporting from November 14, 2015, rather than a current stock audit. Current contact information is available for Gangarams and The Bookworm; third-party directories list Goobe’s and Blossom on Church Street, but confirm their details before setting out.
Goobe’s Book Republic: for South Indian writing and discovery
Scroll described Goobe’s as a small Church Street bookstore and library selling new and second-hand books. The 2015 feature said founder Ravi Menezes opened it in 2008 and highlighted staff interaction with readers and an interest in South Indian writing. At the time, the article named Charu Nivedita’s Zero Degree and Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake as examples of books on its shelves; these are historical examples, not an assurance of current availability.
Amit, identified in the feature as a Goobe’s employee at the time, said the store aimed to give readers “books they can’t find anywhere else” and to promote writing from South India. That account makes the shop especially appealing if you want to browse beyond the most obvious bestsellers. A third-party listing places Goobe’s on Church Street; verify its current location, hours and stock directly before visiting.

Blossom Book House: a wide-ranging browsing stop
The 2015 feature reported that Blossom began in 2001 in a 200-square-foot space devoted to used books. Founder Mayi Gowda estimated then that the shop held 200,000–300,000 titles. That was an estimate reported at the time, not a current inventory count. The feature described a mix of new and used fiction, nonfiction, comics, travel, cinema, philosophy and young adult books.
Blossom is the most natural choice on this list if you want to wander between genres rather than arrive with one narrow category in mind. A third-party directory lists it on Church Street, but confirm current location, hours and availability with the shop.

The Bookworm: a second-hand shop with a reported exchange model
Scroll reported that Krishna opened The Bookworm in 2002, after spending five years selling used books on the pavement, and that the store began stocking new books in 2007. The feature described affordable second-hand books and an exchange arrangement in which customers paid half the book’s price as “reading fees.” Those terms—and the report of two nearby outlets—describe the shop in 2015; do not assume the policy or outlet arrangement still applies.
The Bookworm’s current official About page describes a Bengaluru physical store and an online platform, but does not establish all visitor details. Check the shop’s own current information before planning an in-person visit or relying on an exchange.

Gangarams Book Bureau: a bookselling institution with current contact details
The 2015 feature traces Gangarams’ origins to 1965, when Nanumal Gangaram and his son Atmaram founded it as Bangalore Book Bureau. Its location has changed over time, so the Church Street description in that old feature should not be treated as current directions. Gangarams’ official contact page currently gives its address in Domlur and lists these hours:
- Monday–Saturday: 10:00 am–8:00 pm
- Sunday: 10:00 am–5:00 pm
Prakash Gangaram, who managed the store at the time of the 2015 article, called bookselling “a noble profession” and compared the range of possible stock to an ocean in which readers may still ask for a book a shop does not have. The store also has an official online catalogue, useful for checking whether a title is listed before travelling.

Select Bookshop: a lead for rare and antiquarian titles
The feature reported that lawyer and bibliophile KBK Rao founded Select Bookshop in 1945, and that KKS Murthy managed it from the 1970s. It described an antiquarian shop whose first floor, containing rare books, was usually kept locked; readers could ask for help with specific requests. This is a historical description. Current operation, location, hours and access to rare holdings have not been verified, so contact the shop if you can before visiting or pursuing a particular title.

How to plan your bookshop visit
- Pick the kind of search. For South Indian writing, start with Goobe’s; for broad genre browsing, consider Blossom; for used books, ask The Bookworm about present stock and any exchange terms; for rare or antiquarian books, contact Select about a specific request.
- Check current details. Gangarams publishes a Domlur address and opening hours on its official contact page. The Bookworm’s official About page confirms a Bengaluru physical store and online platform. For the other shops, verify the latest address, hours and visitor arrangements directly.
- Ask about the exact title. The 2015 descriptions do not establish today’s inventory. A call or current message can save a wasted journey, especially for out-of-print, technical or specialist books.
