It is a personal list from her 2019 Guardian essay, not a definitive or newly updated ranking. Rundell’s case for reading beyond age categories is that these books can make hope, fear, love and empathy feel immediate again.
Why adults should read children’s books
Rundell describes writing for “two people”: herself at 12 and herself as an adult, with “two distinct but connected appetites.” That double perspective helps explain why a children’s story can work for readers of different ages without needing to disguise itself as an adult novel.
Her formulation is simple: “Children’s books say: the world is huge. Hope counts for something, bravery will matter, wit, empathy, love will matter.” The point is not that every children’s book offers the same lesson, but that imaginative adventure and emotional seriousness can sit side by side.
There is also a practical reason not to treat children’s fiction as a niche for children alone. The Guardian reported in 2019 that Nielsen’s UK book-sales monitor recorded 10.5 million children’s fiction works bought for readers aged 17 or over in 2018, up from 7.4 million in 2015. The same report said adults bought one-third of the children’s fiction purchased for themselves in 2018. These are historical UK figures, not current sales data. The Guardian’s 2019 report attributes the figures to Nielsen; it says its figures were based on a survey of 3,000 book buyers.

Five children’s books adults should read
These are the titles identified with Rundell’s list in the Guardian’s 2019 coverage. Each offers a different reason to cross the usual age boundary.
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
Grahame’s classic offers a route into children’s fiction through friendship, the pull of home and the comedy of characters with very different temperaments. Its appeal to adults lies partly in the contrast between the quiet pleasures of the riverbank and the disruptions caused by Toad’s exuberance.

Further reading on the case for children’s fiction
Rundell develops her argument in Why You Should Read Children’s Books, Even Though You Are So Old and Wise. Penguin Random House lists the essay as an 80-page hardcover published September 1, 2026. It is a companion to the argument for reading children’s literature, not a sixth story recommendation.
Rundell’s selection is personal and dates from 2019. Its lasting invitation is broader: choose a children’s book for the pleasure of its particular world, humor or emotional honesty, and let adulthood bring a different perspective to the reading.
