First They Came for My College is a 105-minute documentary about the upheaval at New College of Florida after a January 2023 board change. Directed by Patrick Bresnan, it follows the student newspaper, a professor and students across the political spectrum as they navigate the transformation of their campus. Its descriptions of a “political coup” and efforts to “reconquer” the college are the film’s framing, not neutral legal findings.
What is First They Came for My College about?
The film centers on New College of Florida, a public liberal arts college in Sarasota, and the changes that followed a reshaped board of trustees. According to the official synopsis from Roco Films, the story begins on January 6, 2023, when six new trustees were appointed, including Christopher Rufo and Matthew Spalding. The synopsis presents what followed as a political takeover and describes policies intended to transform campus culture.
That language belongs to the film’s interpretation. The documentary’s approach is described as vérité: rather than relying only on retrospective explanation, it follows people experiencing the campus changes. The synopsis identifies the student newspaper, a professor and students across the political spectrum as its central perspectives.
How does the film connect the board changes to campus life?
The Guardian’s Owen Myers reported on March 6, 2026, in an article amended April 9, that board changes and policy shifts affected life at New College. The article described the college in 2023 as having about 700 students; that is a contextual figure reported by the Guardian, not a current enrollment count.

Former student Gaby Batista described how unfamiliar and consequential the board became to students: “As a student at a public university, you don’t know your board of trustees. No one anticipates having to learn their names and have their business become so directly involved in your business.” Her account helps explain why a governance dispute could become a daily campus experience.
Producer Harry W. Hanbury and director Bresnan also discuss the film and the campus changes in the Guardian’s report. Bresnan said: “At a certain point, the film became very serious in documenting our country’s turn toward these fascist practices.” That is Bresnan’s political characterization, not an independently established finding. The film’s use of terms such as censorship, threats to academic freedom and “political coup” should likewise be understood as its perspective on events.
