Bo Bragason’s Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth’s Link look recognizably game-inspired in the first official movie stills. But the images show costume choices, not a near-perfect adaptation of either character—or of any one Zelda game. Nintendo describes the film as an original story based on ideas and concepts from across the series.
What the first images show
Nintendo’s first released photographs show Bragason and Ainsworth in costume as Princess Zelda and Link. The three stills were shared through the Nintendo Today! app and were taken on location in New Zealand, according to Nintendo Life’s November 17, 2025 report. They are the first images to show the lead actors in costume.
In the visible designs, Link wears a dark green tunic over a cream undershirt. Zelda wears a blue dress and has plaits. Those details make both characters easy to recognize, while suggesting a blend of familiar visual cues rather than a direct recreation of one game’s designs.
How the costumes compare with the games
Link: a familiar green silhouette
Nintendo Life described Link’s darker green tunic and cream undershirt as vaguely reminiscent of Twilight Princess. That is a visual comparison made by the outlet, not an official statement that the film adapts that game. The stills offer a glimpse of the costume, but not enough to judge its full design or how it appears in motion.

Zelda: blue dress and plaits
The blue dress and plaits worn by Bragason’s Zelda more closely evoke Breath of the Wild, in Nintendo Life’s reading. The resemblance is limited to visible styling; Nintendo has not identified that game as the movie’s source.
Do the images prove a near-perfect adaptation?
No. They show recognizable character styling, but a few still photographs cannot establish how faithfully the finished film adapts Link or Zelda as characters. They also do not reveal the plot, the full costumes, or the movie’s approach to the world and mythology of the games.

Nintendo’s description is broader than a single-game adaptation: the film is an original work based on the stories, ideas, and concepts of The Legend of Zelda. The franchise has a history of 40 years, according to Nintendo’s September 2026 announcement, but that figure describes the series, not the film’s fidelity to it. The company has not named Twilight Princess, Breath of the Wild, or another individual game as the movie’s source. Nintendo of Canada’s anniversary announcement also mentions a LEGO collectible model and an electronic Master Sword; neither is described as a movie tie-in.
