Spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Finding Her Edge. Adriana ends Season 1 with Freddie, her former skating partner and first love. But the choice is not a simple victory over Brayden: the fake relationship between Adriana and Brayden has grown into something emotionally real, and his hurt—plus his new partnership with Riley—sets up fresh friction. Netflix has announced Season 2, though the interviews discussed here do not confirm its plot.
Why is Adriana caught between Freddie and Brayden?
The triangle works because Adriana’s feelings for both boys are genuine, but rooted in different experiences. Freddie is the person she loved as a child and once skated beside. His return brings that history back into the present. Brayden begins as part of a fake relationship, but time together turns the arrangement into real affection.

Madelyn Keys, who plays Adriana, described the dilemma as a challenge to her character’s belief that there is one correct way to behave. Adriana, Keys said, “has to come to terms with the fact that there is no right answer.” That makes the triangle less a contest with an obvious winner than a choice between two relationships that ask different things of her.
The boys’ responses also shape the conflict. Olly Atkins described Freddie as someone who “really feels responsible for people and their happiness,” suggesting that he has to learn to act on his own feelings rather than focus only on everyone else. Cale Ambrozic said Brayden opens up to Adriana without being judged—something he has not often experienced. Those are actors’ interpretations of their characters, not guarantees of where the story will take them next.

Why does Adriana choose Freddie?
In the Season 1 finale, Adriana chooses Freddie and the two begin a new path as romantic partners and skating partners. Author Jennifer Iacopelli has said that she did not see either boy as the wrong choice: “Neither one of these boys is an incorrect choice.” Her reasoning is tied to Adriana’s age and history. At 16, Adriana has loved Freddie since childhood, and Iacopelli wanted her to have the chance to find out whether that relationship could work.
Iacopelli called the ending a “happily for now,” not a permanent answer about whom Adriana will love as an adult. As she put it, “Maybe [in the future] we reopen that door, and we say, okay, that’s what a 16-year-old chose in that moment. Now we can see what happens next.” The finale resolves Adriana’s immediate decision without settling her whole future.
Keys has offered a different, actor’s-eye view of the Brayden option: she says Adriana loves him, but that he may need to learn more about feeling and communicating before the two could be a perfect match. That is Keys’ interpretation, not an objective verdict on Brayden or a confirmed future character arc.
How the Netflix series differs from the book
The series adapts Jennifer Iacopelli’s 2022 novel Finding Her Edge, but the screen version is not a scene-by-scene guide to the book. Iacopelli has said adaptation changes shifted some moments involving Adriana and Brayden in the novel to moments involving Adriana and Freddie on screen. In her view, those changes strengthened viewers’ investment in Brayden and Adriana.

That distinction matters if you are trying to predict the show from the book: the novel can offer a different version of the triangle, but it is not a precise account of screen canon or a source for what Season 2 will do. Readers who want to compare the original relationship dynamics can look to Iacopelli’s 2022 book, Finding Her Edge.
What makes the finale’s fallout messier?
Adriana’s choice leaves Brayden hurt, not simply displaced in a tidy love-triangle resolution. In the finale, he leaves Adriana shortly before their final performance and later becomes skating partner to Riley, Freddie’s former partner. The cast has framed the new pairing as a possible act of revenge, but that is their interpretation of the ending; the series has not yet established every motive the partnership may carry.
Rank #4
The skating relationships raise the stakes beyond romance. Adriana and Freddie now have to work together on the ice while Brayden and Riley form a new pair. Their professional partnerships can keep the characters in one another’s orbit, and every rehearsal or competition could put personal hurt alongside the demands of skating.
The broader family and rink story offers another source of tension. Before the renewal, showrunner Jeff Norton described the Russo family’s rink being acquired by rival Voltage Skating Academy and said a merger between Russo and Voltage skaters could create friction. He also spoke about the series as a story of love through difficult periods, with family dynamics as well as romance at its center. Those were his stated interests at the time, not a confirmed Season 2 episode outline.

Netflix has announced Season 2, as reported by ELLE. That confirms the series is continuing, but it does not confirm a release date or the specific story of the season. The Riley-and-Brayden partnership and further growth for Adriana are possibilities interviewees have discussed, not announced plot details.
In a later Swooon interview, Iacopelli said the television season was in pre-production at the time of that interview, that she was not privy to its plot, and that the show and her forthcoming book sequel On Thin Ice would diverge. That is a report of the production status then, not a guarantee of the show’s current status or story.
Norton had earlier described a possible second season conditionally: “If we’re lucky enough to have a second season, we will see how she evolves and how these romantic relationships evolve.” His comment predates Netflix’s renewal announcement. It signals the kind of character development he was interested in, rather than confirming what the renewed season will contain.
