FIFA’s reported talks with Apple concerned the inaugural 32-team FIFA Club World Cup, not the men’s national-team World Cup. Bloomberg reported in June 2024 that discussions over a possible global streaming deal had stalled; FIFA later awarded the 2025 tournament’s global rights to DAZN, which made matches free to view on its platform.
Which tournament was FIFA discussing with Apple?
The story was about the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, a club competition staged in the United States from June 15 to July 13, 2025. Its 32-team format was a new, World Cup-scale venture for clubs, rather than a national-team tournament. It was separate from the men’s FIFA World Cup, including the 2026 edition.
That distinction matters: “FIFA” and “World Cup” in early headlines could easily be read as referring to the much more established men’s tournament. The rights discussions reported in 2024 concerned only the new Club World Cup.
What was Apple reportedly considering?
Bloomberg reported on June 20, 2024, that FIFA and Apple had discussed a possible exclusive global television and streaming package, with distribution expected through Apple’s TV ecosystem. The reported proposal was valued at about $1 billion. Bloomberg characterized that figure as roughly one-quarter of FIFA’s target. Neither the amount nor the terms were publicly confirmed by FIFA or Apple as a signed agreement; these were reported negotiations, not an announced rights contract.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
The figure should not be confused with the tournament’s prize fund or with all of FIFA’s expected revenue from the competition. It was a reported value for the potential media-rights arrangement.
Why Apple was a plausible partner
Apple already distributed Major League Soccer through MLS Season Pass, giving it experience with a large live-football offering. A short, internationally marketed tournament could have brought attention to Apple TV, attracted viewers to its sports programming and offered a concentrated event to promote across its ecosystem.

But the Club World Cup presented a different commercial proposition from MLS. MLS offers a recurring season and regular match inventory; the Club World Cup was a first-edition event lasting about a month, with uncertain audience demand and games spread across U.S. time zones. For a rights buyer, an established league’s viewing history is not the same as evidence of demand for a new competition.
Why the talks stalled
The clearest reported obstacle was the gap between FIFA’s valuation expectations and the roughly $1 billion proposal attributed to Apple. Bloomberg also described questions around the new tournament’s commercial prospects and resistance from clubs over financial incentives. Those factors made it harder to establish what broadcasters should pay for rights to a competition without an audience track record.

- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
FIFA then pursued a broader rights process, including regional tenders, rather than relying on the proposed single-platform global package. The public reporting establishes that the talks stalled and Apple did not obtain the global rights; it does not establish a specific reason Apple declined to proceed or show that the reported proposal was a binding bid. Bloomberg’s June 2024 report covered the stalled talks and valuation gap, while Sports Business Journal’s July 2024 report documented FIFA’s subsequent tender process.
How DAZN became the tournament’s global rights holder
In December 2024, FIFA announced a partnership with DAZN for global rights to the 2025 Club World Cup. DAZN made the tournament free to view on its platform, and local broadcast or sublicensing arrangements supplemented that distribution in some territories. FIFA described the agreement as a worldwide distribution plan; “global rights” did not mean that every viewer in every country necessarily used the same service or had identical access conditions.

A free-to-view platform offer lowered the direct access barrier for viewers and supported the goal of broad awareness for a new competition. Commercially, such a model can also help a streaming service attract accounts and audiences for its wider sports offering. That is a plausible rationale for the approach, not a publicly confirmed explanation of every term in FIFA and DAZN’s agreement. FIFA’s announcement of the partnership sets out the global arrangement; Associated Press reporting also covered the deal and its distribution context.
The later relationship extended beyond that tournament: in June 2026 FIFA announced the launch of FIFA+ on DAZN as an exclusive global home for FIFA content, with live matches and archive programming. That subsequent partnership is distinct from the 2025 tournament rights award. FIFA’s June 2026 announcement describes the expanded service.

What the rights episode says about global sports streaming
A single global platform can simplify a deal, but not guarantee reach
One platform can centralize negotiations, branding and audience data. It can also create an access risk if it has less reach than free-to-air television or if viewers in some markets do not use it. Language, local production and territory-specific distribution still matter even when a deal is described as global.
A new event is harder to price than a proven one
FIFA was asking buyers to value a first-edition club competition, not a property with decades of consistent audience and advertising history. A rights holder may expect substantial value from a marquee global event, while a platform must weigh uncertain demand, a limited run of matches and the opportunity cost of exclusive rights.
Free access favors exposure over immediate subscription revenue
Putting matches free to view can reduce friction for curious fans and help establish an audience for a new event. The trade-off is that the rights holder and platform may rely more on scale, advertising, sponsorship or future engagement than on charging viewers directly for those matches. The reported Apple talks and eventual DAZN model illustrate different routes to distribution, but public information does not establish directly comparable financial terms for the two arrangements.
How this differed from the 2026 men’s World Cup
The 2026 men’s World Cup was an established national-team property with broadcast partnerships announced across more than 220 territories. FIFA named, among others, Fox Sports and Telemundo for U.S. coverage, CTV/TSN/RDS in Canada, and Televisa in Mexico. That multi-partner broadcast structure is not evidence of Apple’s involvement in the Club World Cup talks. FIFA’s 2026 broadcast-partnership announcement details that separate rights landscape.
