Anuradha Kumar’s The Kidnapping of Mark Twain: A Bombay Mystery imagines Twain vanishing from his hotel room during his 1896 Bombay visit. The historical setting is grounded in a documented journey, but the novel’s characters and central crime should not be mistaken for archival fact.
What happened to Mark Twain in Bombay?
In the novel’s premise, Mark Twain is in Bombay and disappears from his hotel room in the middle of the night. That is the mystery of Anuradha Kumar’s historical novel, The Kidnapping of Mark Twain: A Bombay Mystery, not an established event in Twain’s life. The excerpt is explicitly labeled fiction by Scroll.in; no source consulted documents a real disappearance.
The distinction matters because the story places an invented mystery inside a real journey. Henry Baker and Abdul, named in the excerpt, belong to the novel’s fictional cast. Their roles should not be treated as evidence about people who actually encountered Twain.
What is known about Twain’s real Bombay visit?
A published chronology reports that Twain and his family, the Clemens party, arrived in Bombay on January 18, 1896, and took rooms at the Esplanade Hotel, also known as Watson’s Hotel. The novel uses Watson’s Hotel as its setting. The Mark Twain Project provides a scholarly route into Twain’s life and documentary record, while the arrival and hotel details here are attributed to the consulted chronology rather than independently verified archival records.

A secondary account in The Indian Equator places Twain at Watson’s Hotel the following day, ill after the voyage, and describes the hiring of a bearer named Manuel, later replaced by a servant nicknamed Satan. Those details offer a picture of the hotel and household context as reconstructed by that author; they are not a substitute for a contemporary record.
How does the historical setting connect to Twain’s writing?
Twain wrote about his travels in India in Following the Equator, which is available in a digitized edition. The book includes a letter dated Benares, February 5, 1896, and discusses travel and the work of bearers. A secondary passage in The Indian Equator reproduces Twain describing a bearer’s many duties, but its wording and punctuation should be checked against a reliable edition before quotation. For documentary work, the Mark Twain Project explains that its scholarly editions draw on early relevant sources and holdings of the Mark Twain Papers at The Bancroft Library, with historical notes and documentary apparatus.
Did Twain give lectures in Bombay?
The consulted chronology reports three Bombay lectures and identifies the Novelty Theatre as the venue for Twain’s first “At Home” program. The original newspaper records were not inspected for this account, so these details should be understood as chronology-reported information, not as findings independently confirmed from the period press.

The Kidnapping of Mark Twain: A Bombay Mystery by Anuradha Kumar is the source of the fictional disappearance premise. The excerpt credits Speaking Tiger Books. This is a reading recommendation, not historical evidence: the novel supplies the mystery, while the hotel and visit provide its historical backdrop.
