FFmpeg YouTube Live Shows Old Frames When Looping a Video: How to Troubleshoot It

When a looping FFmpeg video appears stale on YouTube Live, verify input option placement and pacing, then compare local output with YouTube stream health before diagnosing the cause.

If your FFmpeg-powered YouTube Live stream appears to show old frames after looping a video, first check that -stream_loop -1 comes before the input’s -i option, and that a file being sent to a live output is paced with -re. Then compare FFmpeg’s local output with YouTube’s stream-health information. Those checks help locate the problem; without your command, media details, logs, and stream-health messages, the symptom alone does not establish a cause.

Check the loop and input pacing first

FFmpeg treats -stream_loop and -re as input options. Put each before the -i for the file it should affect. The value -1 tells FFmpeg to loop that input indefinitely. For a file feeding a live stream, -re reads at the file’s native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1) instead of sending the file as fast as possible. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
  -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv 'RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_NAME'

This is an illustrative starting point, not a tested universal fix. Replace the input filename and ingest placeholder; use the primary RTMPS ingest URL and stream name assigned for your YouTube stream. Never publish your live stream key. The example assumes a 30 fps output, so -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds. Choose bitrate and encoding options for your actual resolution, frame rate, source, encoder, and sustainable upload capacity.

Confirm the loop option applies to the right input

Inspect the full command, not just the loop flag. Because -stream_loop is an input option, it must precede the corresponding -i. If the command has multiple inputs, check that the option is placed before the input you intend to repeat. Some inputs cannot seek back to their start; stream-copy looping also depends on suitable keyframe and timestamp conditions. These are possibilities to investigate, not proof that a particular file is responsible. The FFmpeg Cookbook looping guide discusses option placement and stream-copy assumptions.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use real-time pacing for a file, not a live capture

For prerecorded file input going to a live output, check that -re is before that file’s -i. FFmpeg cautions against applying low read rates to actual capture devices or live streams: throttling a source that is already live can cause packet loss. Do not add -re indiscriminately to every input.

Locate where the old frames appear

Compare what FFmpeg is producing locally with what YouTube receives and plays. If the local output is already stale, investigate the command, source, timestamps, and encoding process. If local output looks current but YouTube playback does not, inspect the ingest and stream-health information. This comparison narrows the search; it does not, by itself, identify the underlying fault.

  • Record whether the delay or repeated image is visible in a local output or only in YouTube playback.
  • Keep the exact command, FFmpeg version/build, source format and timestamps, relevant logs, and the time the symptom occurred.
  • Review YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages while live. YouTube recommends a representative preflight test and monitoring stream health; its LiveStreams API documentation describes stream status and health fields.

Compare encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a stream will be healthy. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table before changing a production stream because guidance may change.

Match bitrate to resolution, frame rate, and connection

For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube currently lists a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended video bitrate. That figure is specific to H.264 at 1080p30; do not apply it as a universal target for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. Make sure the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. If it cannot, lower the configured quality and test again.

Check audio and keyframe cadence too

YouTube’s guidance for stereo audio lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For video, compare the configured keyframe interval with the two-second recommendation and four-second maximum. In the example command, -g 60 is two seconds only when output is 30 fps; at another frame rate, calculate the GOP length accordingly.

Troubleshoot in a controlled order

  1. Inspect option placement. Confirm -stream_loop -1 and, for prerecorded input, -re are before the intended file’s -i.
  2. Check local output. Determine whether stale frames are visible before YouTube ingest. Preserve the command and logs rather than changing several settings at once.
  3. Review YouTube health. Check Live Control Room messages or relevant API stream-health fields around the time of the issue, and run a representative preflight test.
  4. Compare settings. Verify codec, output frame rate, CBR behavior, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio settings, and ingest configuration against YouTube’s current guidance.
  5. Test upload capacity. If the connection cannot reliably carry the selected bitrate, lower the output quality and repeat the test.

Do not assume that a loop-boundary timestamp, encoder overload, keyframe cadence, or network capacity is the cause without evidence from the output and logs. When asking for help, include the exact FFmpeg command with the stream key removed, FFmpeg version, source-file properties, relevant log excerpts, and YouTube health messages.
