FFmpeg YouTube Live Settings for Prerecorded 720p60 Video

A practical FFmpeg pattern and preflight guide for sending prerecorded 720p60 video to YouTube Live over RTMPS, with the recommended bitrate, keyframe interval, audio settings, and troubleshooting checks.

For a prerecorded 1280×720 video at 60 fps, use FFmpeg to send H.264 video at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps, with constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. Encode stereo audio as AAC at 128 Kbps, read the file in real time with -re, and send it to the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum H.264 bitrate for 720p60; the recommendation is an ingestion target, not a guarantee of picture quality.

Recommended FFmpeg settings for YouTube Live at 720p60

These settings follow YouTube’s encoder guidance checked on October 3, 2026. Confirm the current guidance and the values shown in your Live Control Room before an event, since platform requirements can change.

Setting Recommended value What to know
Frame size and rate 1280Ă—720 at 60 fps Use this if it matches the intended stream and the source can support it.
Video codec H.264 Supported by YouTube’s standard RTMP/RTMPS workflow.
Video bitrate 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum YouTube’s 720p60 H.264 guidance. Source complexity, encoder quality, and upload stability affect the result.
Rate control CBR Use constant bitrate as YouTube recommends.
Keyframes Every 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
Audio AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; AAC is a straightforward choice for a new setup.
Transport RTMPS YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS. Copy the endpoint and key from Live Control Room.

The bitrate is the amount sent to YouTube, not a promise that every source will look equally good. A noisy, fast-moving, or highly detailed video can be harder to encode than a static image at the same bitrate.

Prepare YouTube Live and FFmpeg

  1. Set up the live event in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your event.
  2. Check your FFmpeg build and input file. Confirm that the build includes the libx264 encoder if you plan to use the command below, and that FFmpeg can read the file and its audio. The exact filters or stream mapping may need changes for a particular source.
  3. Check sustained upload capacity. Your connection needs reliable headroom above the stream’s total bitrate, including audio and network overhead. YouTube recommends checking upload speed before streaming.
  4. Run a representative test. Use audio and movement similar to the planned video, then review YouTube’s stream-health messages before the event.

Command pattern for a prerecorded file

This adaptable example scales and converts the input to 720p60, encodes H.264 at an 8 Mbps target using CBR-style bitrate limits, and sends AAC stereo audio to an RTMPS endpoint through the FLV muxer:

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
  -vf "scale=1280:720,fps=60,format=yuv420p"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
  -g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "YOUR_RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Replace input.mp4 and the final placeholder with your actual file and the RTMPS server URL and key from Live Control Room. Check the URL format shown by YouTube rather than assuming all endpoint/key formats are interchangeable. The command is a pattern, not a tested or guaranteed configuration: local FFmpeg builds, input streams, filters, timestamps, and endpoint syntax can require adjustments.

Why the main options are there

  • -re reads the media file at its native rate so FFmpeg does not send it as fast as possible.
  • scale=1280:720,fps=60,format=yuv420p sets the output dimensions, frame rate, and pixel format. Scaling or frame-rate conversion cannot add detail or motion that is absent from the source.
  • -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M sets CBR-style bitrate constraints at the recommended target. Encoder behavior can vary by build and settings.
  • -g 120 sets a 120-frame GOP: at 60 fps, that is two seconds between keyframes. -keyint_min 120 and -sc_threshold 0 help keep keyframe spacing consistent.
  • -bufsize 16M is an encoder buffer setting in this example, not a separate YouTube bitrate recommendation.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 encodes stereo AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.
  • -f flv selects the container commonly used for RTMP-family output.

When stream-copying might work

If the source already has compatible video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, keyframe cadence, timestamps, and container characteristics, stream-copying may avoid re-encoding. Check those properties and test the file before relying on stream-copy; a successful connection alone does not establish that the video will meet YouTube’s stream-health expectations.

Test and monitor stream health

Start a test before the event and include representative sound and movement. During transmission, watch YouTube’s stream-health status and read its diagnostic messages. The Live Streaming API health diagnostics identify issues such as low bitrate, unsupported video codec, keyframe intervals that are too long, or multiple audio or video streams.

  • Connection succeeds but video is unhealthy: check the health diagnostic, output codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and whether FFmpeg is sending multiple audio or video streams.
  • Bitrate warning or unstable delivery: check FFmpeg’s output and whether upload capacity remains comfortably above the total stream bitrate. A speed test is useful, but it does not guarantee stability throughout the event.
  • Keyframe warning: verify the output frame rate and GOP settings together. At 60 fps, 120 frames is two seconds; a GOP longer than four seconds is flagged in YouTube’s diagnostics.
  • Codec warning: confirm the actual output is H.264, not just that the input filename or intended command suggests it should be.

RTMPS or HLS ingestion?

For the command pattern above, RTMPS is the practical default: YouTube recommends it, and it encrypts the connection. YouTube also supports HLS ingestion for workflows that need it, but HLS is segment-based, typically has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion, and has distinct packaging requirements, including supported segment/container structure and AAC audio. It is not a drop-in replacement for the FLV/RTMPS example.

Copyright and YouTube’s live-stream rules

Before broadcasting prerecorded material, make sure you have the rights or permission needed to use the video and audio. A technical configuration does not establish that a stream complies with YouTube’s copyright rules or other platform policies. Check YouTube’s current rules for your content and event in Live Control Room, and resolve any rights or policy concerns before going live.
