Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a 720p, 60 fps H.264 playlist stream, start with 8 Mbps video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps. At 60 fps, two seconds equals 120 frames, so the FFmpeg GOP setting is -g 120. Prefer YouTube’s RTMPS ingest address, use the stream key from your channel’s Live Control Room, and test the actual playlist before relying on it.
Recommended settings for 720p at 60 fps
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 video at 720p60 and lists 3 Mbps as the minimum. It recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, its guidance specifies 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Video resolution and frame rate | 1280Ă—720 at 60 fps | Matches the requested 720p60 output. Scaling and frame-rate conversion in the command below are practical choices, not requirements for every source. |
| Video codec and rate control | H.264 with CBR | YouTube lists CBR in its encoder guidance. |
| Video bitrate | 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum | These are YouTube’s stated H.264 values for 720p60. Use a lower output only if necessary for a stable connection, understanding that it is below the recommended rate. |
| Keyframes / GOP | Every 2 seconds; -g 120 at 60 fps |
The frame count is calculated from YouTube’s two-second interval and 60 fps. Do not exceed four seconds (240 frames at 60 fps). |
| Audio | AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | A straightforward match for YouTube’s stereo audio guidance. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS where supported | YouTube recommends RTMPS. Copy the ingest address shown for your stream in Live Control Room. |
YouTube also lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit depth for SDR. These can guide a compatible H.264 SDR encode; they should not be read as mandatory settings for every stream.
Prepare Ubuntu, FFmpeg, and the playlist
Check the installed FFmpeg build
Ubuntu release and FFmpeg package builds differ, and libx264 is available only when enabled in the build. Check what is installed before using the template:

Make playlist files compatible
The concat demuxer expects playlist items to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. If your videos differ, normalize them to common stream properties before concatenating, or test every transition carefully. A September 2024 FFmpeg-user discussion illustrates timestamp warnings and frame problems with a heterogeneous playlist; it is an example, not proof that every mixed playlist will fail. See the concat-demuxer response and the playlist streaming question.

For a concat-demuxer playlist, create a text file such as playlist.txt with one entry per file:
file '/absolute/path/video-01.mp4'
file '/absolute/path/video-02.mp4'
Use paths that exist on the Ubuntu machine. The example command uses -safe 0 to allow paths outside the concat demuxer’s restricted safe-path format; only put trusted file paths in this playlist.

Start the 720p60 YouTube Live stream
This is a starting template, not a tested command. It assumes a compatible concat playlist and an FFmpeg build with libx264. Replace the playlist path and RTMPS destination with your own values. Do not put your stream key in a shared script, public repository, or logs.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-vf "scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=60,format=yuv420p"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -profile:v high -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
-g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'rtmps://<ingest-address>/<stream-key>'
What to adapt
-rereads the input in real time;-stream_loop -1repeats the playlist indefinitely.- The video filter scales to fit within 1280Ă—720, pads to that canvas, converts to 60 fps, and sets a broadly compatible pixel format. If your source is already correctly formatted, test whether this conversion is appropriate for it.
-b:v 8Msets the target video rate, while matching-maxrate 8Mand-bufsize 16Mare practical rate-control choices. They are not individually mandated by YouTube. Confirm behavior with your local encoder and FFmpeg version.-g 120and-keyint_min 120express a two-second GOP at 60 fps;-sc_threshold 0is a template choice to avoid scene-change keyframes changing that cadence.- The preset, profile, buffer size, scaling, padding, frame-rate conversion, and scene-change option are template decisions, not all platform requirements. Check the output and machine load with your actual files.
- Replace the placeholder destination with the RTMPS address and stream key supplied for the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a secret. Use the values for the specific stream rather than assuming an older key or destination applies.
Test the stream and monitor it live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast, and copy its ingest address and stream key into the command’s destination.
- Run the command before the scheduled broadcast and inspect the incoming preview and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room.
- Check that picture motion, framing, and audio are correct, including transitions between playlist items. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Check Ubuntu’s upload capacity while FFmpeg is sending. The connection needs to sustain the encoded video and audio rate with headroom; if it cannot, lower the output rate or improve the connection rather than assuming 8 Mbps will be reliable everywhere.
- Watch FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream health during the test. A command that starts successfully does not guarantee that the machine, playlist, or network will sustain a stable broadcast.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
Unknown encoder 'libx264' |
The installed FFmpeg build lacks that encoder. | Check ffmpeg -encoders and your distribution’s available FFmpeg build. The command requires an enabled H.264 encoder; do not assume every Ubuntu package includes it. |
| FFmpeg cannot open a playlist file | Incorrect path, quoting, or playlist entry. | Check that playlist.txt and every referenced file exist and that the entries use valid paths. Keep paths simple while diagnosing. |
| Timestamp warnings, freezes, or glitches at transitions | Playlist files may have different stream layouts, codecs, or time bases. | Inspect the files and normalize them to matching stream properties before concatenation. Test the entire playlist, not only its first item. |
| YouTube reports unstable or insufficient stream health | Upload capacity may be inconsistent or inadequate for the encoded rate. | Test the connection during streaming, leave headroom, and reduce the bitrate or improve the connection if needed. |
| Broadcast does not connect | Wrong ingest address or stream key, or an unsupported protocol/build combination. | Copy the current values from Live Control Room, check for accidental whitespace, and use RTMPS where supported. |
| Black bars, unexpected crop, or uneven motion | The source aspect ratio or frame rate differs from the 720p60 output conversion. | Review the scale-and-pad filter and inspect motion and framing in the YouTube preview. Change the filter deliberately if the source needs different treatment. |
| CPU usage is high or output falls behind | The computer may not encode the actual playlist in real time with these settings. | Test the target machine with the real files and monitor whether FFmpeg sustains real-time output. No universal minimum hardware requirement can be inferred for every source and Ubuntu build. |
Copyright and YouTube live eligibility
Having a technically valid FFmpeg command does not establish that you have the rights to stream the playlist. Use recordings and music you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules before going live. A playlist that loops continuously also does not by itself establish compliance with YouTube’s monetization or reused-content policies; those are separate from encoder settings.
