FFmpeg YouTube Live Settings for 1080p at 24 FPS: Looping Video Correctly

Use H.264, CBR, and a 48-frame GOP for 1080p24 YouTube Live. Learn source-specific FFmpeg looping, RTMPS setup, and why YouTube has no published 24 fps bitrate row.

For a 1080p, 24 fps YouTube Live loop, use progressive 1920×1080 video, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval: 48 frames at 24 fps. Send it over RTMPS where supported, and include AAC stereo audio if the source has sound. YouTube’s published live bitrate table has no 1080p24 row, so it does not provide an official bitrate specifically for this frame rate.

Recommended settings for a 1080p24 stream

These settings provide a practical H.264 baseline. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends CBR, RTMP or RTMPS, progressive scan, and square pixels. The platform also supports HEVC and AV1 in its live guidance, but compatibility depends on the encoder and ingestion path. YouTube’s live encoder settings gives the platform’s current requirements and recommendations.

Setting Recommended value Important qualification
Resolution and scan 1920Ă—1080, progressive, 16:9 Use square pixels. Choose scaling or padding to fit the source without unintentionally cropping it.
Frame rate 24 fps Set the output rate deliberately, then verify the encoded stream reports 24 fps.
Video codec H.264 A broadly compatible baseline. YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1, subject to encoder and platform support.
Rate control CBR If the encoder exposes separate target and maximum bitrate or VBV controls, configure them consistently.
Keyframes / GOP One keyframe every 2 seconds: 48 frames at 24 fps YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds: 96 frames at 24 fps. Confirm the encoder’s GOP behavior.
Audio AAC stereo; 128 kbps; 44.1 kHz Relevant when the source has audio. YouTube also lists MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS.
Color For SDR, Rec. 709, 8-bit Do not label or configure a stream as HDR unless using a supported HDR workflow.
Ingest RTMPS Use the endpoint shown in YouTube Live Control Room and its matching stream key.

What bitrate should you use at 1080p24?

YouTube’s published live H.264 bitrate table does not specify 1080p24. It lists 1080p30 at a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and 1080p60 at a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. Those figures apply to the listed frame rates; neither row is an official 24 fps prescription. Check the current YouTube live encoder table rather than treating an adjacent row as a 24 fps rule.

Because there is no published 1080p24 value, choose a bitrate for your actual footage and encoder rather than presenting an invented number as YouTube’s recommendation. Fine detail, motion, and encoder settings affect how much bandwidth is useful. Test with movement and audio similar to the real stream, watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health information, and leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends testing before going live.

Choose the loop method that matches your source

A still image, numbered image sequence, and existing video are different FFmpeg inputs. Select the input handling for the source; there is no single loop option that should be pasted in front of every command.

One still image

Use the image2 demuxer’s input frame-rate and loop controls before the corresponding -i. Its default frame rate is 25, so set the intended rate explicitly when using a still image as a continuous video source. See the FFmpeg all-options documentation for image2 options.

Numbered image sequence

Use the image2 sequence pattern and choose an input frame rate that matches the intended timing, or deliberately convert the output rate. Sequence images should have consistent dimensions, pixel format, and file format. Image2 input options belong before their -i.

Existing video file

FFmpeg’s loop video filter can repeat frames indefinitely with loop=-1. An input-loop option may also be available, depending on the installed FFmpeg version. Check the local build’s supported options and validate timestamps, audio duration, and the transition where the file repeats; looping does not guarantee a seamless seam. The FFmpeg filters documentation describes the loop filter.

Build the FFmpeg command

The following is an illustrative command shape, not a tested, ready-to-run command. Replace the placeholders, select input options for your source, and check that your FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoder and options. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next specified input or output, so placement matters. Its documentation distinguishes output -r from input frame-rate handling; for image2 inputs, use the demuxer’s -framerate where appropriate. See FFmpeg command-line documentation.

ffmpeg [source-specific loop/input options] -i INPUT
  -vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=24,format=yuv420p"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_RATE -maxrate VIDEO_RATE -bufsize VBV_SIZE
  -g 48 -keyint_min 48 -sc_threshold 0
[optional audio mapping and AAC encoding]
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
  • INPUT is your image, image sequence, or video file. Put source-specific input options before its -i.
  • VIDEO_RATE and VBV_SIZE must be chosen for your encoder and stream; no official YouTube 1080p24 bitrate is published.
  • The filter scales to fit and pads to 1920Ă—1080, preserving the whole frame rather than cropping it. If the input is already suitable 1080p24, unnecessary scaling can be omitted.
  • The GOP values set a 48-frame interval at 24 fps. Confirm the actual encoder’s keyframe interval and closed/open GOP behavior; YouTube flags open GOP settings and excessively long GOPs as potential stream problems.
  • Add audio mapping and AAC encoding only when the input has audio. Verify that the selected stream maps and audio duration behave as intended.
  • Replace the RTMPS endpoint and key with the values associated in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the RTMPS ingest URL and corresponding stream key for the broadcast.
  2. Insert them in the output URL in the form shown by YouTube, without sharing or publishing the key. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure extension of RTMP; see its RTMPS help page and RTMPS developer guide.
  3. Start FFmpeg and check its output for connection or encoding errors. Confirm that YouTube reports an incoming stream.
  4. Before the real broadcast, test representative motion and audio, then check stream-health messages in Live Control Room.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom What to check Likely next step
No incoming video RTMPS endpoint, stream key, FFmpeg output, and YouTube’s incoming-stream state. Confirm the URL and matching key in Live Control Room; correct connection or input errors shown by FFmpeg.
Buffering or poor stream health Sustained upload capacity, configured bitrate, and YouTube’s health messages. Check for video starvation (not enough video arriving to maintain smooth streaming), reduce the configured rate if the connection cannot sustain it, or improve available upload headroom.
Codec, resolution, or frame-rate warning The actual encoded stream properties against YouTube’s incoming requirements. Inspect the output codec, dimensions, frame rate, and pixel format; correct mismatches and test again.
Keyframe or GOP warning Actual keyframe interval and whether the encoder is using an open GOP. Set the two-second target, verify the encoder applied it, and check its GOP configuration. YouTube’s API describes long GOPs and open GOP configuration among potential stream issues: LiveStreams API.
Visible or audible jump at the loop point Source timestamps, video cut, and audio duration at the seam. Inspect the repeated source transition and validate it in a test stream; FFmpeg’s loop capability alone does not establish seamless playback.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Other protocol and hosting choices

RTMPS or HLS

RTMPS is the straightforward secure default for this command-line workflow. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, which has different media-packaging requirements and is segment-based, typically bringing more latency. Use HLS only when your encoder and workflow are configured for that ingestion method; see the YouTube HLS ingestion guide.

Local computer or hosted machine

FFmpeg can run on a local computer, but a continuous broadcast then depends on that machine, its power, and its internet connection staying available. A VPS or dedicated host is an optional category for running a process continuously, not a requirement for FFmpeg; choose and assess a provider for your own workload rather than assuming a particular hardware specification.

Copyright and YouTube policies

Technical streaming settings do not grant rights to the video or audio. Before looping a documentary, music, or other recording, make sure you have the rights or permission needed for the material. Copyright claims and YouTube’s monetization rules are separate from whether FFmpeg successfully sends a stream. Consult YouTube’s current policies and resolve rights questions before broadcasting.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous loop rather than learning or maintaining an FFmpeg setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a YouTube-only live stream from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; an offline laptop does not stop the cloud stream. Every quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
