First identify what “playlist” means—an FFmpeg concat list, an HLS playlist, or a YouTube playlist—then compare the actual media streams with ffprobe. For an FFmpeg concat list, use stream copy only when the clips’ streams are suitable for concatenation; otherwise normalize and re-encode. For HLS, check the playlist paths, segments, container, and the audio and video formats inside each segment.
First identify which playlist is stopping
These three things are not interchangeable, and the fix depends on which one you have:
- FFmpeg concat list: a text file of media filenames used as input to FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, often with
-f concat. - HLS playlist: a
.m3u8manifest that points to media segments, sometimes with separate playlists for multiple variants. - YouTube playlist: a collection of separate YouTube uploads. It is not an FFmpeg concat list or an HLS manifest; the FFmpeg concat and HLS procedures below do not diagnose YouTube’s own playlist behavior.
Note where playback stops. If it consistently stops exactly at a clip or segment boundary, compare that boundary’s metadata, paths, and FFmpeg or player errors first. A boundary can help narrow the investigation, but it does not establish a particular codec as the cause.
Inspect every Android recording with ffprobe
Run this on each source file, not just the first one. FFmpeg and ffprobe are command-line tools; replace the example filename with the exact path to a recording.

ffprobe -hide_banner -i phone1.mp4- Repeat for the other recordings, especially the two adjacent clips where playback stops.
- Compare the detected container; the number and order of audio and video streams; video codec and profile, dimensions, frame rate, and pixel format; audio codec, sample rate, and channel layout; and duration or timestamp information.
A shared filename extension does not prove the streams match. An .mp4, .3gp, .ts, or .webm suffix alone is not enough to infer the actual codecs or compatibility. The specific mismatch, if any, has to come from your files’ metadata.
Android’s MediaRecorder API documents multiple output formats. It recommends 3GP when using H.263 video with AMR audio, warning that MPEG-4 with that particular combination may confuse some desktop players. That is a conditional compatibility note—not evidence that your phone used H.263 or AMR. Android’s MediaRecorder overview also notes that MPEG-2 TS support was added in Android 8.0/API 26 and describes it as useful for streaming; it does not establish that a particular recording app produced TS.

Fix an FFmpeg concat list
FFmpeg offers different concatenation methods for different inputs. Its concat FAQ describes the concat filter as the method to use when re-encoding is needed and the concat demuxer as an option when avoiding re-encoding. The concat protocol works at file level and is not a general substitute for checking media stream compatibility.
Use the concat demuxer with stream copy only when streams are suitable
If probing shows that the clips have compatible stream layouts and parameters, a concat demuxer list can be used without re-encoding. Create a text file such as clips.txt with one entry per file:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i clips.txt -c copy joined.mp4This is not a universal repair command. Use it only when the stream-copy concatenation is appropriate for the files and intended output. If the output fails at a boundary, or the metadata shows differences that make stream copy unreliable, use a normalized re-encode instead.
Normalize and re-encode when the clips differ
The following is an illustrative pattern for two video-only inputs, not a tested fix for unspecified recordings. Adapt it to the actual dimensions, frame rates, audio tracks, and target player. The concat filter expects its inputs to be made compatible; a real workflow may need explicit scaling, frame-rate, pixel-format, or audio filters before concatenation.

If the audio stream count or channel layout differs, address that explicitly rather than assuming the video-only example will preserve sound.

If the failing item is an HLS .m3u8, inspect the exact media playlist and the segment at the point playback stops. Verify that each referenced URI resolves from the player’s location, that the segment exists and is complete, and that the segment’s container and contained audio and video formats are supported by the target player.

For Android Media3 ExoPlayer, the HLS guide explains that support depends on the contained audio and video sample formats as well as the HLS container. A playlist that parses, or a familiar extension, does not by itself prove sample compatibility.
If you generate multiple HLS variants with FFmpeg, check that the output filename pattern includes %v. FFmpeg’s HLS format documentation requires it for output filename patterns when generating two or more variants. This requirement is relevant only to multi-variant output.
Verify the repair at the failing boundary
- Run
ffprobe -hide_banner -i normalized.mp4on the repaired output, or probe the relevant HLS segments individually. - Play through the exact clip or segment boundary that previously stopped, using the same Android device and playback app.
- Check FFmpeg’s output for stream, timestamp, or muxing errors. For HLS, also confirm the referenced segment is available and complete where the player requests it.
- If it still stops, record the first useful error line and compare it with the metadata at the boundary rather than changing codecs at random.
Common causes and what to check
