Short answer: FFmpeg is the stronger fit when you want a repeatable, configurable command-line setup to loop a local video into YouTube Live. VLC can also transcode and stream, but the available official documentation does not establish a current, exact VLC menu-by-menu recipe for looping to YouTube Live. Neither tool is documented here as guaranteeing uninterrupted 24/7 operation or automatic recovery. Whichever you choose, test the stream and make sure you have the rights to broadcast the music and video.

Which should you choose?

Decision FFmpeg VLC
How you configure it Command line; explicit inputs, stream selection, encoding and output settings. GUI-oriented player with streaming and transcoding output workflows.
Looping a local file FFmpeg’s documentation includes an infinite-loop input example, but it is not a complete YouTube Live recipe. Confirm options for your installed version. VLC supports streaming and transcoding. The official material available for this comparison does not establish exact current GUI steps for looping a file to YouTube Live.
Best fit A creator comfortable with commands who wants repeatable settings or scripting. A creator who prefers an interactive workflow and is prepared to verify version-specific streaming and looping controls.
Long-run reliability No guaranteed uptime or automatic recovery is established. Process supervision and network recovery need separate planning and testing. No guaranteed uptime or automatic recovery is established. Test and monitor the stream.

This is a workflow comparison, not a benchmark: there is no measured performance result here showing that one program runs longer or reconnects better. FFmpeg exposes more of the pipeline directly; VLC may feel more approachable, but its precise controls depend on the installed version.

What you need before streaming

  • A local video file containing the material you intend to broadcast, and a computer capable of reading and encoding it if you are encoding in real time.
  • A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live and an event or stream configured in Live Control Room.
  • The stream server URL and stream key from YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or publish it, and reset it if it is compromised.
  • Upload bandwidth that can reliably sustain the chosen output bitrate, with room for normal network variation.
  • Permission to livestream the video and music, including the relevant music rights. A track being available on YouTube or being Indian-language or Indian-origin content does not establish permission to rebroadcast it.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds; it says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Choose settings your encoder supports and that match the resolution, frame rate and available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL; use the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room when available. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance is the reference for supported settings and recommendations.

Output example YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended

These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee of a clean stream on a particular connection. YouTube also recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio, its guidance gives 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. The appropriate video bitrate varies with resolution and frame rate. If your connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate consistently, lower the output settings or improve the connection before going live.

HLS is a separate delivery path, not a simple substitute for RTMP. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency because it sends video segments. Its HLS requirements include TS segments, segment durations from one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Use HLS only when your intended codec or HDR workflow calls for it and your encoder supports YouTube’s requirements; otherwise, RTMP/RTMPS is the more direct path for this setup.

Loop a video with FFmpeg and send it to YouTube Live

FFmpeg’s general pattern is to provide input options, then input, then output options and the destination. Options are position-sensitive: they generally apply to the next input or output, so keep input-related options before the input and output-related options before the output URL. The infinite-loop input option is documented, but the exact command depends on the installed build, codecs and file. The following is a template, not a tested, copy-and-run YouTube recipe:

Replace the destination with the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for your event in Live Control Room; never leave a real key in a shared command, screenshot or script. The sample’s 5 Mbps video bitrate and 30 fps are illustrative, not universal recommendations. For the 1080p30 example, YouTube’s H.264 guidance recommends 14 Mbps and gives 5 Mbps as the minimum; use settings suitable for your actual resolution, frame rate and stable upload capacity. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds for the chosen frame rate: at 30 fps, that means 60 frames. Verify that the input’s audio and video streams and the selected codecs work in your FFmpeg build before relying on the command.

  1. Prepare the YouTube event. In Live Control Room, create or select the event and its stream key. Copy the server URL and key, choosing the RTMPS URL shown by YouTube where available. Keep the key private.
  2. Check the installed FFmpeg options. Confirm your version supports the input loop option and encoders used in the command. FFmpeg’s official documentation contains an infinite-loop input example, but the example is not a complete YouTube setup. Check the documentation for your installed version if an option is rejected.
  3. Set the output for your video. Match the frame rate, resolution and bitrate to the source and your upload connection. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and confirm the audio format is supported. The example above uses H.264 and AAC.
  4. Start FFmpeg, then check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the video and audio appear correctly and that Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream before starting the public event.
  5. Monitor the event. Watch stream health and messages, listen for audio through the preview, and check that the event is accessible. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion before going live.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you are planning a longer continuous broadcast, consider how the event length and any archive affect your workflow rather than assuming a single event will run indefinitely.

Can VLC stream a video to YouTube Live?

Yes. VLC has streaming and transcoding output capability, so it can be used to send media to a network destination. However, the detailed official VideoLAN material available for this comparison concerns selecting FFmpeg hardware encoders in a particular workflow; it does not document an end-to-end, current VLC procedure for looping a file to YouTube Live. Exact menu names and loop controls may differ by VLC version, so verify them in your installed release rather than relying on an unverified menu path.

At a high level, configure VLC’s streaming output to use the YouTube server URL and stream key, select compatible video and audio encoding, and enable repeat or loop behavior if the installed version exposes it for the chosen input/output workflow. Then start the output and verify the preview in Live Control Room before going live. If VLC’s output does not expose the codec, bitrate, keyframe or loop controls you need, FFmpeg makes those parameters more explicit. In either case, verify the actual incoming stream; choosing settings in the encoder alone does not prove YouTube is receiving them correctly.

Protect the music rights before you broadcast

YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the rights needed to exploit live content worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and other royalty participants. That obligation applies to Indian music just as it does to music from elsewhere. A song’s availability online, a personal purchase, or the fact that it is a devotional, folk or regional recording does not by itself authorize a livestream.

Use recordings and video for which you have the necessary permissions for live broadcast and any resulting archive. Review the terms and rights for every track in a playlist, including recordings by third parties. YouTube’s terms are at YouTube Livestream terms and conditions.

Reliability: what looping does—and does not—solve

Looping tells the media player what to do when it reaches the end of an input; it does not guarantee that the encoder process, computer, internet connection or YouTube session will remain available. The official documentation considered here does not establish uninterrupted 24/7 operation or automatic reconnect for either FFmpeg or VLC. FFmpeg scripts can make parameters repeatable, but process restarts, network failures and stream-session behavior require their own recovery plan. Test a representative run and monitor it rather than treating a loop option as an uptime guarantee.

Use a test stream to catch problems

  • Check that the event preview contains both picture and sound before going live.
  • Listen for clipped, silent or out-of-sync audio, especially when the loop restarts.
  • Watch Live Control Room’s stream health and messages for bitrate, connection or encoding warnings.
  • Confirm the event is accessible as intended and that the selected stream key belongs to that event.
  • Test long enough to observe the file reaching its end and looping; a successful first minute does not show what happens at the transition.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no stream Wrong server URL or key, a mistyped destination, or the encoder has not started sending. Copy the current URL and key from the selected Live Control Room event; keep the key private. Confirm the encoder is running and inspect its output and YouTube preview.
FFmpeg rejects an option The installed build or version does not support that option or encoder. Check the local FFmpeg documentation and available encoders; adjust the command to the installed version rather than assuming every build is identical.
Stream health reports unstable delivery Upload capacity may not sustain the chosen bitrate, or the network may be fluctuating. Check the encoder bitrate and connection; lower output bitrate or resolution if needed, then test again under representative conditions.
Video arrives but audio is missing or unsuitable The input may have no usable audio stream, or the output audio settings may be incompatible. Check the source’s audio stream and encoder output; use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and verify sound in YouTube’s preview.
The stream stops when the file ends Loop behavior was not enabled or is unsupported in the selected workflow. For FFmpeg, confirm the documented input loop option is placed before the input and test the end-of-file transition. For VLC, verify the loop control for your version and output method.
Audio or picture changes at the loop point The file’s ending and beginning may not join cleanly, or the output pipeline may handle the transition differently than expected. Preview the transition in a test run; edit or choose a source with a suitable ending and beginning if a seamless join matters.
YouTube flags or interrupts a music stream The broadcast may lack required rights or trigger a platform rights review. Stop using material unless you can establish the necessary livestream and archive rights; contact the relevant rights holders and review YouTube’s terms.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
