For an unattended, repeatable loop of a prerecorded gaming replay, FFmpeg is generally the better fit: it gives you explicit control over looping, encoding and delivery, and it can be run from a script. VLC may suit a manual, graphical workflow, but verify its exact repeat-and-stream behavior for your installed version before relying on it. Neither choice removes the need to keep a computer or server running and supervise the stream. For a YouTube-only cloud alternative, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video looping without a local machine.
What each tool can—and cannot—do for a replay
A gaming replay file is not a live broadcast by itself. To appear on YouTube Live, it must be played out as a continuous encoded feed to YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and a private stream key; setting an ordinary YouTube upload to repeat does not create an ongoing live broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
FFmpeg and VLC are ways to produce and send that feed from a machine you operate. The practical difference is workflow, not a proven performance ranking: FFmpeg is a command-line tool with explicit options that can be scripted, while VLC is a graphical media player whose repeat and streaming chain should be confirmed in the version you plan to use. No tool comparison or live stream test is established here.
At a glance: FFmpeg, VLC, or a cloud service
| Option | Best fit | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | A YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos, with always-on looping, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; the first day is free. | It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots. |
| FFmpeg | Repeatable runs, scripts and direct control of codec, bitrate, keyframes and output. | You must verify options against your installed FFmpeg build, keep the sending machine online, and arrange monitoring and restart handling. |
| VLC | Manual playback and a graphical workflow may be more comfortable. | Confirm the precise playlist/repeat and streaming behavior for your VLC version and chosen output chain. Do not assume the repeat control alone creates a compatible YouTube feed. |
The FFmpeg/VLC distinctions above are workflow judgments, not benchmark results. YouTube requires both to deliver a compatible feed over a sufficiently stable outbound connection.

Prepare the replay and the YouTube stream
Check the video and rights
- Confirm the file plays from beginning to end, has the intended audio, and uses the resolution and frame rate you plan to send. Note whether it has one audio stream, multiple audio tracks, or unusual video properties; those can affect the output you need.
- Check that you have the rights to broadcast the gameplay footage and any music included in the recording. Rights depend on the game, publisher terms, and music; there is no blanket clearance implied by using a replay.
- For a playlist of several files, do not assume they can be joined by stream copy. Concatenation without re-encoding is sensitive to matching codecs, resolution, frame rate and stream layout. Normalize the files or re-encode them when those properties differ. StreamNeo’s FFmpeg guide discusses this issue and a playlist example; it is vendor material, not an independent test.
Create the YouTube broadcast and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open the encoder workflow in Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s current setup prompts to obtain the ingest URL and stream key.
- Use RTMPS when your encoder and ingest configuration support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Current YouTube guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps; available choices depend on the encoder build and configuration. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not paste it into a public script, screenshot, chat or article. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube’s stream settings guidance describes keys as the stream’s password and address.
- Start with a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your channel, and verify the image, sound and YouTube stream-health indicators before making the broadcast public.
Loop a single replay with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s command-line options have an order: input-specific flags go before the corresponding -i, while output settings follow the input. Its command-line documentation covers the syntax. The following is an example pattern, not a tested command; confirm that your build includes the selected encoder and that the options suit your source.
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i "replay.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 48000
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
Here, -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely, and -re paces file reading in real time rather than sending the file as fast as possible. The input-specific flags appear before -i. The output uses H.264 video, AAC audio and FLV muxing, a common RTMP-family delivery pattern; validate compatibility with the current YouTube setup and your FFmpeg build.

The example’s 8 Mbps video rate and 120-frame GOP are not universal settings. The 120-frame GOP corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval only at 60 fps. Set keyframe interval using the actual output frame rate; YouTube currently recommends two seconds and sets a four-second maximum. Use constant bitrate (CBR) for the encoder configuration, and verify how your build applies rate-control flags. The sample’s -b:v, -maxrate and -bufsize values are a pattern to adapt, not proof that every build produces identical CBR behavior.
Choose a bitrate and frame rate that fit
YouTube’s current H.264 recommended incoming bitrates include 6 Mbps at 720p30, 8 Mbps at 720p60, 14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees for a particular connection or viewer. Its table gives separate recommendations for H.265 and AV1, so do not apply the H.264 figures to another codec. Check the current encoder settings table before broadcasting.

Match output resolution and frame rate to the source where practical. Upscaling a lower-resolution replay does not add detail, and forcing a higher frame rate does not recreate missing motion. Fast gameplay can expose compression more than low-motion footage, so test with a representative section that includes movement and the replay’s actual audio.
Make sure the upload connection has headroom above the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and advises testing the outbound connection, not relying on download speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips. Leave room for audio and network variation rather than setting the video rate equal to the measured maximum.

Put the key in locally and test
Set YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY in your local shell environment using the values shown by YouTube; do not publish their values or commit them to a shared script repository. The output target in the example combines those variables. Confirm the exact ingest URL format supplied by YouTube for your broadcast.
- Run the command on the machine that will stay connected for the duration of the broadcast.
- Check FFmpeg’s output for input-read errors, encoder initialization failures or connection errors. Confirm that the video and audio reach YouTube.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health during a test that uses comparable motion and audio. If health degrades, reduce the bitrate or frame rate, improve the outbound connection, or choose settings better matched to the source.
- Only begin the public broadcast once the test is stable. For an unattended run, use a process supervisor or service with logging and a deliberate restart policy; scripting makes operation repeatable but does not guarantee uptime or recover every failure.
Use VLC when a graphical workflow suits you
VLC may be more comfortable if you prefer selecting and playing media in a graphical application. The important distinction is that repeating playback and sending a YouTube-compatible live feed are separate parts of the workflow. This research did not locate a current official VLC guide demonstrating the complete loop-to-YouTube-Live path, so no particular menu path or version-specific sequence can be stated reliably here.

- Check the VLC version installed on the machine you intend to use, and consult documentation for that exact version for playlist repeat and streaming/output behavior.
- Confirm that the chosen output chain can send the ingest format YouTube expects, including the required video and audio encoding settings. Do not infer that a media player’s repeat control also configures a live encoder.
- Use the YouTube ingest URL and private key from Live Control Room, protecting the key as you would a password.
- Run a private or unlisted test long enough to verify that the replay actually repeats, audio remains present, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream. Test the unattended behavior separately before depending on it.
If you require precise encoding settings, repeatable startup or script-based supervision, FFmpeg is the more direct fit. If you prefer a GUI, VLC is a reasonable candidate to evaluate, but verify its behavior in practice rather than assuming a particular sequence or reliability level.
Plan for long runs, recovery and archives
A local FFmpeg or VLC stream stops if the sending machine shuts down, loses power or internet, or the process exits. A script can help restart a process, but recovery depends on the failure and how the supervisor is configured. YouTube stream-health monitoring and a test run remain important even when the playback loop itself is indefinite.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be fully archived. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits immediately or reports an option error | An option is unavailable in the installed build, is in the wrong position, or the encoder is absent. | Check the installed FFmpeg build and its help output. Keep input-specific options before their -i; put output encoding and destination options after the input. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect ingest URL or key, a connection failure, or an incompatible output configuration. | Copy the current broadcast’s ingest details from Live Control Room, verify RTMPS support and inspect encoder/network errors. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Stream health warns of instability or dropped frames | Insufficient upload headroom, unstable network conditions or a bitrate that exceeds sustainable outbound capacity. | Measure outbound capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, then test a lower bitrate or frame rate. |
| Picture looks soft or blocky during fast gameplay | Bitrate may be low for the incoming resolution and frame rate, or the source itself may be limited. | Check the H.264 or codec-specific YouTube recommendation for the selected format; assess a representative motion-heavy test before changing settings. |
| The replay stops after one play, or audio is missing | Loop behavior may not be configured for the input, or the selected output chain may not include the intended audio stream. | For FFmpeg, verify the input loop option precedes -i; for either tool, test the complete repeat-and-output chain and inspect audio before going public. |
| A multi-clip playlist fails at a transition | Clips may differ in codec, resolution, frame rate or stream layout. | Normalize media properties or re-encode the clips into a consistent format before joining them. |
