Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a channel that continuously loops prerecorded videos, FFmpeg is usually the more practical place to start if you are comfortable with command-line setup and supervising a process. It can send compatible files to YouTube without decoding and re-encoding them. Choose OBS instead when you need its graphical scene controls, overlays, capture sources, or frequent manual switching—and can keep its scene-rendering workload manageable.
Neither program guarantees a 24/7 stream by itself. Your PC, power, upstream connection, process recovery, and stream monitoring all matter. There is no universal CPU winner: results depend on the actual computer, media, settings, and workload.
Which should you choose for a low-cost PC?
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A simple prerecorded video or playlist running repeatedly | FFmpeg | Its command-line pipeline can read media files and send them to a network stream. When the source is already compatible, stream copy avoids a decode-and-encode pass. |
| Scenes, overlays, camera or capture sources, and hands-on switching | OBS | Its graphical interface makes it easier to build and operate a scene-based production. |
| A PC close to its limits | Test both with your real media before committing | OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes; FFmpeg can also demand substantial compute if it must transcode or filter. The actual load depends on the PC and settings. |
FFmpeg’s stream-copy mode is useful only when your source’s codecs and format fit the intended YouTube feed. It cannot apply filters in that mode. Resizing, adding an overlay, changing codecs, or otherwise processing the picture requires filtering and/or encoding, which changes the resource requirements. The FFmpeg documentation describes its input, filtering, stream-copy, encoding, and output capabilities.
OBS is not automatically too demanding for an inexpensive PC, but a complex scene can overload it. The OBS Project recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes and sources when performance is poor; browser sources and filters can add load. Its guidance is troubleshooting advice, not a benchmark comparing OBS with FFmpeg. See OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.

What to check before you leave a stream running
Confirm the channel and content are ready
- Check that your channel can create a live stream and configure it in YouTube Studio before scheduling unattended playback.
- Use video and audio that you have the right to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright, monetization, and reused-content policies for your channel and content. A technically successful stream does not establish that content is authorized or eligible for monetization.
- Decide whether the stream should be public, unlisted, or private, and whether YouTube should archive it. Verify the resulting watch page and archive where applicable.
Set the encoder to match YouTube and your connection
YouTube’s currently surfaced English encoder-settings guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, supports H.264, H.265, and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with a maximum of four seconds. For H.264, the page’s table lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30; for 1080p30 it lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube settings, not guarantees that a particular PC or connection can sustain them. Recheck the current table in YouTube Studio before configuring because platform guidance can change. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Measure the actual upload connection, not just download speed. YouTube advises keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Other household or office traffic can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder, and a connection disruption can break a stream. If upload capacity varies, choose a lower bitrate that the connection can sustain and test it over realistic operating hours. Refer to YouTube’s streaming tips.

Protect the stream key
YouTube’s stream key and server address let an encoder send a feed to YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not post it in a public script, screenshot, log, or chat, and reset it in Studio if it is exposed. Follow the current stream setup shown in YouTube’s live stream settings. Use the server URL and stream key from your own Studio configuration rather than copying credentials from an example.
Run a prerecorded loop with FFmpeg
This example is for one compatible video file on a computer that has FFmpeg installed. It loops the file and reads it at its intended playback rate. Replace the filename and use the RTMPS server address and stream key shown for your stream in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private.

- Prepare and test the source. Confirm that the file plays correctly from beginning to end, including audio, and that its codecs and format are suitable for stream copy. For a quick local inspection, run
ffmpeg -i "documentary.mp4"; FFmpeg prints the detected streams and file details. An inspection command may return a nonzero status because no output was requested; read the stream information in its output. - Configure the destination. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key. The exact ingest address and settings should come from Studio.
- Start the loop. On a shell where FFmpeg is installed, use this template, replacing the destination and key with the values from Studio:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "documentary.mp4" -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"
The command uses stream copy, so it does not resize, overlay, or convert the source. If YouTube rejects the feed or the source is incompatible, check the input codecs and the current YouTube requirements; do not assume stream copy can fix a format mismatch. - Verify the live output. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room preview. Check video, audio, stream health, and the public watch page using the intended visibility setting before relying on the loop.
- Plan for interruption. Run the process under a suitable supervisor if you need it restarted after a process failure, and configure alerts or a regular check for stream health. A supervisor can restart a local process; it cannot restore a failed power supply or internet connection. Document who will respond and how to restart or replace the stream.
For a playlist, decide how files should be ordered and whether transitions or uninterrupted joins matter. A straightforward concatenation workflow has format compatibility requirements; test the full playlist rather than assuming files with different codecs or parameters will join cleanly. If you need transitions, titles, filters, or live scene changes, stream copy is not enough and OBS or an FFmpeg filtering/encoding pipeline may fit better.
Set up OBS for a simple continuous stream
- Build only the scene you need. Add the prerecorded media source and any essential elements. Avoid unnecessary browser sources, filters, and elaborate overlays on a constrained PC.
- Set modest output settings first. In OBS, open Settings → Video and choose an output resolution and frame rate the computer can render consistently. In Settings → Output, select an encoder and output bitrate consistent with YouTube’s current guidance and the real upload link. Hardware encoders may be available, but whether they help depends on the installed hardware and configuration.
- Configure streaming from Studio. In Settings → Stream, select YouTube and connect the account or enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Do not expose the key.
- Test before going live. Start with a private or unlisted test as appropriate, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and watch OBS for rendering or encoding overload. Reduce resolution or frame rate and simplify scenes if performance is unstable.
- Make recovery operational. Decide how OBS will be relaunched after a crash, who receives alerts, and how to recover from a network or power interruption. A scene editor is not a process-recovery system.
Network, power, and recovery: the part neither encoder solves
A 24/7 channel depends on more than the encoder. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, checking the Live Control Room preview, testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet, confirming mobile or watch-page access, and monitoring audio and video quality. Adapt that guidance into a written recovery plan and test it with your actual setup. Do not assume YouTube will restart every local failure. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.

Costs and trade-offs for an India-based setup
A local PC workflow has costs beyond the encoder software: the computer’s electricity use, connectivity, replacement or backup equipment, and the time needed to monitor and recover the stream. The right total depends on your machine, local electricity tariff, ISP plan, and hours of operation; no specific Indian PC, power, or ISP price can be assumed here. A cloud service changes which equipment must remain running but has its own service terms and price, so compare it with your actual local costs rather than an invented generic PC estimate.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports an unstable or interrupted stream | Upload capacity, shared network traffic, or connection disruption | Measure upload performance, reduce bitrate to a sustainable level with headroom, and test during typical network use. |
| FFmpeg fails to connect or YouTube does not show the feed | Server URL, stream key, ingest settings, or unsupported input | Copy current details from Studio, verify the key remains private and current, and inspect FFmpeg’s output for connection or input errors. |
| Video or audio is missing or incorrect | Source streams, mapping, codec compatibility, or media playback | Inspect the file with FFmpeg, play it locally, and verify both audio and video in the Live Control Room preview. |
| OBS shows rendering or encoding overload | GPU rendering load, scene complexity, output resolution, frame rate, or filters | Simplify sources and filters, then lower output resolution or frame rate and test again. |
| The stream stops after a computer or network failure | Power, ISP, or missing process supervision and alerts | Test the recovery procedure by stopping the encoder or temporarily disconnecting the network, then verify that the responsible person is alerted and can restore the feed. |
