For a 1080p, 25 fps YouTube Live stream, start with progressive 1920×1080 H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 50-frame keyframe interval—two seconds at 25 fps. YouTube does not publish a separate H.264 bitrate recommendation for 1080p25; its closest listed reference is 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30. Treat that as a starting point, test from the actual connection and encoder you will use in India, and adjust if YouTube reports delivery problems.
Recommended starting settings
This configuration is for SDR H.264 video sent to YouTube Live from FFmpeg. It uses YouTube’s two-second keyframe recommendation and the nearest published H.264 bitrate row, while making clear that the bitrate row is for 30 fps, not 25 fps.
| Setting | Starting value | Reason or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and scan | 1920Ă—1080, progressive | 1080p SDR output. |
| Frame rate | 25 fps | Matches the requested output rate. |
| Video codec | H.264 | The example below uses H.264; YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported live video codecs. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube specifies constant bitrate for live encoder settings. |
| Video bitrate | 14 Mbps as a working reference | YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30, not 1080p25. The same row gives 5 Mbps minimum. Do not treat either figure as an official 25 fps value. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; GOP 50 frames | At 25 fps, 50 frames equal two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | YouTube supports AAC or MP3; its advanced settings specify 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo. |
| Picture format | Square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR | YouTube’s advanced recommendations also list progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS where supported | YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure live-ingest option. |
The 14 Mbps recommendation is a nearby published reference, not a precise 1080p25 mandate. YouTube’s separate 1080p60 H.264 row is 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended; it does not establish a 1080p25 value. These are live-ingest figures, not upload recommendations. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Build and adapt the FFmpeg command
For an existing media file, this is an illustrative template, not a tested command or a guarantee of quality. Replace INPUT, the RTMPS ingest address, and the stream key with the values for your stream. Confirm that your local FFmpeg build includes libx264 and RTMPS support.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT

-g 50 -keyint_min 50 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'rtmps://<ingest-host>/<stream-key>'
-rereads a file at its intended playback rate. It is useful for file replay; do not blindly apply it to a live-capture input, which should follow its real-time behavior.- The scale-and-pad filter fits the picture inside 1920Ă—1080 while preserving its aspect ratio, then adds padding if needed. The
fps=25filter sets the output frame rate, andformat=yuv420pproduces a common 8-bit pixel format. -b:v,-minrate, and-maxrateset the example video target and bounds for constant-rate operation. The 14 Mbps target uses YouTube’s 1080p30 recommendation as a reference because no 1080p25 row is published.-bufsize 28Mis an example encoder parameter, not a YouTube-prescribed buffer size.-g 50sets a 50-frame GOP at 25 fps;-keyint_min 50and-sc_threshold 0help keep keyframes on the intended interval rather than inserting scene-change keyframes earlier.- The command does not explicitly set every advanced encoder recommendation. YouTube lists two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC among its advanced H.264 settings; available controls can depend on the encoder and FFmpeg build. Consult FFmpeg’s documentation for command and encoder options and verify local support.
If the source already has the intended aspect ratio and frame rate, remove unnecessary scaling, padding, or frame-rate conversion to avoid needless processing. Check that encoding stays at or above real time.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
- Prepare the live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and retrieve the server URL and stream key shown for that event. YouTube defines latency as the delay from capture to playback; lower latency can increase playback buffering. Choose a latency setting that fits the event rather than assuming the lowest setting is always best. Details: YouTube Live Control Room and encoder setup guidance.
- Keep the key private. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it, share it, or leave it in a command history or script that others can access. Use the exact RTMPS server URL provided in Live Control Room if your build supports RTMPS.
- Replace the placeholders. Set
INPUTto your media file and replace the example RTMPS destination with YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the format required by the Control Room. The placeholder in the command is not a real ingest URL. - Test before the event. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test with representative audio, motion, and duration. YouTube’s advice is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check that the FFmpeg process sustains real-time encoding and inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Test the actual connection in India
YouTube’s reviewed live guidance is platform-wide; it does not specify a separate India bitrate, regional ingest URL, or India-only FFmpeg flags. Network routes and sustained upload capacity vary by ISP, location, time, and connection type, so there is no single nationwide upload figure that can guarantee a stable stream.

- Run an upload-speed test from the encoder’s actual event location and connection, then do a full pre-event stream test on that same route. YouTube recommends checking upload speed and testing before going live: live streaming troubleshooting and setup.
- Leave room for network variation rather than assuming a speed-test peak can be sustained throughout the stream. If stream health shows persistent delivery problems, lower the video bitrate or resolution and retest.
- Use the bitrate guidance for live ingest, not YouTube’s recommendations for uploading finished videos.
- Compare a configuration against four practical limits: codec support in the local FFmpeg build, stable upload capacity, CPU or GPU ability to encode 25 fps in real time, and the buffering trade-off of the chosen latency.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or cannot initialize libx264 |
The local build lacks that encoder or its required support. | Check the available encoders in your FFmpeg build; use a supported encoder and confirm its options. FFmpeg builds vary. |
| Connection fails or YouTube does not receive video | Incorrect server URL or key, or RTMPS unsupported by the build or destination. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check the RTMPS support in the local build, and keep the key secret. |
| Stream health reports delivery trouble or playback buffers | The bitrate may exceed sustained upload capacity or the route may be unstable; low latency can also increase playback buffering. | Test the event connection, reduce bitrate or resolution if delivery remains poor, and reconsider the latency setting if buffering is the issue. |
| Encoding falls behind real time | The computer may not sustain the selected filter and encoder workload. | Check FFmpeg’s reported processing speed. Remove unneeded scaling or frame-rate conversion, or reduce the workload and test again. |
| Image is stretched, cropped, or padded unexpectedly | The source aspect ratio differs from the output frame, or scaling is unnecessary. | Review the scale-and-pad filter and verify the source dimensions. If the source is already 16:9 at 1080p, omit the fit conversion if appropriate. |
| Audio is missing or unsuitable | The input may lack an audio stream or the selected channel layout differs from the intended output. | Inspect the input’s audio streams and confirm AAC encoding, stereo output, 128 Kbps, and 44.1 kHz where appropriate. |
