If FFmpeg skips or jumps past gaming VOD files in a YouTube stream, first confirm what kind of playlist you are using. For an FFmpeg concat-demuxer list, check the affected files’ streams, codecs, time bases, durations and paths, then inspect the log at the transition. The right fix depends on the actual command and media: inaccurate durations can disrupt timestamps, while incompatible files may require normalization or filtering and re-encoding.
First, identify the playlist type
Concat-demuxer and HLS playlists are different inputs, so a fix for one may not apply to the other. A concat-demuxer playlist is a text script containing file entries and possibly other directives. An HLS playlist commonly uses an M3U8 manifest. Check the FFmpeg command to see which input you pass to FFmpeg before changing options. iTechGuides’ troubleshooting overview describes the playlist-skipping symptom, but the input type and files determine the diagnosis.
For a concat script, inspect the file order, paths and directives. If you rely on automatic format recognition, FFmpeg requires the marker ffconcat version 1.0 to be the first line, with no extra space or byte-order mark. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Diagnose the skipped file before changing the command
- Save the exact command and playlist. Remove stream keys or other private ingest credentials before sharing either one.
- Locate the first bad transition. Note the file FFmpeg fails to play or jumps past, then capture the log around the preceding and following file transition.
- Probe the affected files. Compare their stream count and order, codecs, time bases and reported durations. Check whether audio and video end at different times, and whether each file is complete.
- Read the specific error. A rejected path, timestamp jump and incompatible stream layout point to different causes; do not treat them as the same problem.
Without the command, playlist, transition log and media metadata, it is not possible to select one definitive fix for a particular stream.

Check the common concat-demuxer causes
Files have different streams, codecs or time bases
For concat-demuxer stream copy, the files need the same streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. Compare stream order and layout as well as codec names: two VODs that both play normally on their own can still be unsuitable for direct concatenation. If they do not match, normalize the inputs or use a filtering and re-encoding workflow rather than expecting a loop or playlist flag to make them compatible. FFmpeg’s concat documentation describes the stream requirements.
A file’s duration is wrong or misleading
The concat demuxer uses each file’s duration to position the next file’s timestamps. FFmpeg warns that an incorrect duration—for example, one inferred from bitrate or associated with a truncated file—can cause artifacts. Compare the reported duration with the actual media and check that the file is complete. A duration directive in the concat script can override an inaccurate stored duration, but use a measured or otherwise defensible value, not a guess. See the official documentation.

Audio and video end at different times
Timestamp adjustment applies across the file’s streams. If audio and video do not have exactly the same duration, the next segment may have gaps. Check the end points of both streams in the affected VODs before treating a gap as a YouTube or network problem. This behavior is covered in the concat demuxer documentation.
A playlist path is rejected
The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1. If FFmpeg reports that a path is unsafe, inspect the path and the error first. Setting -safe 0 permits any filename, but relax that check only when the playlist contents and paths are trusted. See FFmpeg’s documentation for the safe option.

Choose the concatenation method that fits the files

FFmpeg’s FAQ on concatenating video files distinguishes the concat demuxer from the concat filter: the filter is the re-encoding-oriented choice, while the demuxer can avoid re-encoding when files are compatible.
Troubleshoot by symptom
- FFmpeg refuses to open a listed file: Check the path, file existence and log. If the error concerns the safe-path check, review whether the trusted playlist requires
-safe 0. - The stream jumps or shows artifacts at a transition: Compare durations and inspect whether the preceding file is complete; the demuxer uses duration to position the next file.
- Some VODs work but others do not: Compare the stream layout, codecs and time bases of a working file with a skipped one. If they differ, assess normalization or a filter/re-encode workflow.
- There is a gap or audio/video drift at a boundary: Check whether audio and video end at different points in the files involved.
- The playlist looks correct but the issue persists: Confirm whether it is actually a concat script or an HLS manifest, then investigate the corresponding input path and logs.
