To keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving your computer on, either run FFmpeg on a different host that stays online or use a managed service that supports prerecorded YouTube Live streams. FFmpeg gives you control but leaves hosting, file storage, monitoring and recovery to you. A managed service takes on the streaming operation; check that it supports looping uploaded videos and understand its limits before relying on it.
What “without a PC” means
YouTube receives a live audio-and-video feed from an encoder. In a self-managed setup, FFmpeg is that encoder and must run on a host that remains available; the video file must be accessible to it. If you do not want to maintain an always-on host, a managed service can run the encoder in the cloud. YouTube’s API documentation describes a 24/7 feed use case, but that is not an uptime guarantee for any particular host or service.
A YouTube broadcast and the stream connection that carries its audio and video are separate objects. You create or select the broadcast in YouTube Studio, then connect an encoder using the stream URL and stream key. For scheduled broadcasts, connecting the encoder may not be the final step: wait for the preview and use YouTube Studio’s Go live action when required. FFmpeg or a managed service?

The YouTube and FFmpeg documentation establishes the streaming workflow, not a vendor ranking, service inventory or provider pricing. Treat service-specific capabilities as items to verify with the provider rather than assumptions.

How to loop a prerecorded video with FFmpeg
1. Prepare the YouTube broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream. Do not publish it or place it in a public script or repository.
- For a scheduled broadcast, note whether Studio requires you to wait for the encoder preview and click Go live after the connection is established.

2. Put the media and encoder on a host that stays online
Install FFmpeg on a host you can keep running and place the authorized video file where FFmpeg can read it. The host must have a working internet connection and enough capacity to send the stream continuously. Your own computer can be off only if the encoder process and media are available elsewhere.
FFmpeg documents network streaming and input/output behavior, but the exact command depends on the source file, desired output, and YouTube ingestion protocol. Use the FFmpeg documentation to build and test a command for your input and output rather than assuming a generic loop command fits every file: FFmpeg Documentation. Confirm that the chosen looping method actually repeats the file, and observe the output after the first pass; a command that sends one file once is not a continuous loop.

3. Configure the YouTube destination and start sending
Use the stream URL and key from Live Control Room as the encoder’s destination and authentication details. Keep credentials out of logs and public configuration. Start FFmpeg, then check YouTube Studio for an incoming preview and stream health. If the broadcast is scheduled, take the separate Go live action when Studio indicates it is needed.
The stream key is sensitive configuration, not a public link. If you need to replace it, update the encoder’s configuration to match the key currently shown in YouTube Studio before restarting the feed.
4. Plan for supervision and long runs
An unattended stream needs more than a command that starts successfully. Decide how you will detect a stopped process or lost connection, restart it, and check that YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio. FFmpeg documents an I/O-error option relevant to long-duration network output, but that option is not an uptime or recovery guarantee. YouTube’s Live Streaming API exposes stream status and health information, including configuration issues, for diagnosis: LiveStreams resource.

Also plan for what viewers see between file endings, whether playback returns cleanly to the start, and how you will respond if the host reboots or the network fails. These are operational choices you must test for your specific command and host.
Choose RTMPS or HLS based on the stream
RTMPS for ordinary encoder output
YouTube documents RTMPS for ordinary user content. RTMPS is RTMP carried through SSL; Google’s connection guide specifies the rtmps scheme, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and path, and port 443. The guide was updated September 14, 2026. Use the endpoint and path supplied for your stream rather than inventing one: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
HLS when its format support is needed
YouTube says to use HLS for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP. The encoder must support YouTube’s HLS requirements: TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. Use HLS only if your encoder supports those requirements and your format needs it. See Set up an HLS stream.

Archive expectations and rights
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a stream lasting 12 hours or longer will be archived, so do not rely on YouTube for an archive of a longer continuous broadcast. Keep your own copy if you need a dependable recording: YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Only stream material you have the rights to use. A video being prerecorded or repeatedly broadcast does not itself establish permission to use its music, footage or other content. Review applicable rights and YouTube’s policies before scheduling a long-running feed; a rights problem can interrupt a stream regardless of whether FFmpeg or a service sends it.

- YouTube shows no incoming video: Check that FFmpeg is running, the host has internet access, and the configured stream URL, endpoint and key match the active stream in Studio.
- The encoder connects but the scheduled broadcast is not live: Check the preview in Live Control Room and whether Studio requires you to click Go live.
- The feed stops after one play: Verify the input playback configuration is set to loop, then watch through a complete file pass to confirm it starts again.
- The feed drops and does not return: Check host connectivity and process status. Configure and test supervision or use a managed service whose recovery behavior is explicitly documented; do not assume FFmpeg automatically restarts itself or reconnects successfully.
- YouTube reports a configuration or health issue: Review the stream’s health details in Studio or through the LiveStreams resource, then check protocol, endpoint and encoder compatibility.
- HLS is delayed or rejected: Higher latency is expected with segmented HLS delivery. If using HLS, confirm every required segment, playlist, HTTPS method and encryption setting; if you do not need HDR or unsupported-codec delivery, consider RTMPS instead.
- The stream is not archived: YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not promise an archive for longer streams.
