What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose based on where your video comes from and what must encode it. A Raspberry Pi is the more natural starting point for a camera or capture device at a physical site, provided the specific Pi and FFmpeg setup can handle the workload. A VPS is usually the better starting point when the source is already a file or network feed the server can reach and the chosen plan can sustain the required processing and upload. Neither option guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 stream: the source, host, network, YouTube ingest, and recovery setup all matter.
Which should you choose?
| Your situation | Better starting point | Why | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| A camera or capture device is at a physical site | Raspberry Pi or another local Linux host | The source is already local. A VPS can use it only if the feed is reachable from the server. | Confirm the camera input, encoder path, power, heat, upload stability, and recovery behavior. |
| Your source is an online video file or network feed | VPS | FFmpeg can read network inputs and send output to network URLs. | Test the exact server plan with the full workload and check its outbound-transfer terms. |
| You need local H.264 encoding on a Pi | Pi 4 is the more direct candidate in Raspberry Pi’s cited comparison | Pi 4 has a documented H.264 hardware path; Pi 5 relies on software encoding. | Verify that your FFmpeg build exposes the encoder and test the actual resolution, frame rate, filters, and duration. |
| Your source is already encoded suitably | Test stream copy before transcoding | Copying compatible streams can avoid the host’s video-encoding workload. | Inspect codecs, profile, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframes, timestamps, and audio. Compatibility depends on the particular source. |
| You want uploaded videos to loop in the cloud, not an FFmpeg setup | Consider StreamNeo as a separate hosted workflow | It loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud; it is not a local-camera encoding solution. | Review the workflow and plan details below. |
These are starting points, not guarantees of 24/7 reliability. A local setup depends on power, ISP service, temperature, camera and process health; a VPS depends on its provider, server capacity, source reachability, and network. Both also depend on YouTube ingest and stream lifecycle.
What the host has to do
Raspberry Pi: keep the source close
A Pi makes sense when the camera or capture device is physically nearby and the Pi can read its feed directly. The exact board matters if FFmpeg must encode H.264. Raspberry Pi’s official materials distinguish Pi 4’s hardware encode path, including h264_v4l2m2m, from Pi 5, which has no encode hardware on the platform and uses software encoding such as libx264. This is an architecture difference, not proof that every Pi 4 configuration will work or every Pi 5 configuration will fail. Performance depends on resolution, frame rate, filters, FFmpeg build, and the rest of the workload. See Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 software environment discussion and its H.264 encoding performance note.
Before choosing a board, find out whether the camera already outputs a compatible encoded stream. If it does, test whether FFmpeg can pass it through rather than decode and re-encode it. That can reduce encoding work, but compatibility cannot be assumed: check the actual stream format and YouTube settings first.

VPS: bring the source within reach
A VPS is a practical fit when the video is already stored online or available through a network feed. FFmpeg supports network inputs and network outputs, but the server must be able to reach the source reliably. Test the exact instance type, CPU architecture, FFmpeg build, codecs, and filter chain under the intended continuous workload. Hardware-acceleration support depends on the available hardware and suitable drivers; FFmpeg’s -hwaccels output lists only the acceleration components enabled in that particular build. The FFmpeg documentation describes its input/output model and hardware-acceleration caveats.
Set YouTube’s ingest settings before comparing performance
The encoder must deliver a format and bitrate that suit the stream. Google / YouTube Help’s current guidance, checked 2026-10-03, recommends RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. The H.264 bitrate figures below are YouTube recommendations, not measured performance claims for a Pi or VPS.
| Output target | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 14 Mbps |
Use the ingest URL and stream key issued for the specific YouTube Live stream. Keep the key private: do not publish it, put it in shared commands, or allow it to appear in logs. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for its current settings and requirements.

Build and test the stream in stages
1. Confirm the complete input path
For a Pi, test the actual camera or capture-device input on the local host. For a VPS, confirm the server can reach the remote file or feed and that the source remains available. Check whether the source is already encoded appropriately before deciding to transcode. FFmpeg can handle different inputs and outputs, but that general capability does not establish that a particular camera feed or file is compatible.
2. Match output to the intended stream
Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval for the actual YouTube stream. Do not infer the Pi’s or VPS’s capacity from YouTube’s recommended bitrates. If encoding, test the complete filter and audio chain on the selected hardware or server.
3. Measure the whole workload
Run a representative test at the intended resolution and frame rate, using the real source and audio path. Include representative movement and audio; YouTube explicitly recommends testing with both. Measure whether the host sustains encoding or stream copy without falling behind, and whether the uplink has headroom above the target bitrate. YouTube also recommends testing upload speed and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.

4. Add supervision and remote monitoring
For a headless FFmpeg process, configure a service supervisor with restart behavior, backoff, and logs. Also monitor the stream’s health at YouTube: a local process can appear to be running while the remote broadcast has a problem. The YouTube AutoEncoder project documents one systemd supervision and recovery pattern; its README is an implementation example, not independent evidence of uptime.
What can interrupt a continuous stream?
- Source failure: a camera, capture device, remote file, or network feed can stop or become unreachable.
- Host failure: a Pi may lose power or overheat; a VPS may encounter provider maintenance or insufficient capacity.
- Network failure: local ISP trouble, unstable uplink, or server-to-source reachability problems can interrupt delivery.
- Encoding or process failure: a codec, filter, or workload may exceed the host’s capabilities, or FFmpeg may exit.
- Ingest or broadcast lifecycle issues: YouTube’s ingest and the stream’s broadcast state are separate dependencies that should be monitored.
A supervisor can restart a failed process, but it does not fix a dead source, inadequate capacity, or an unreachable network. Design recovery around the failure modes you can observe, and verify that YouTube receives the stream again after a restart.

No comparable current Pi-versus-VPS prices or apples-to-apples total-cost figures are established here. A useful comparison needs the period of use, power and local connectivity, source access, encoding workload, provider plan and outbound traffic allowance, and the time you will spend operating and recovering the stream. A Pi’s purchase cost alone is not equivalent to a recurring VPS charge, and either option can require additional connectivity or maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a VPS for a camera that is on another network?
Yes, if the camera feed is reachable from the VPS and its connection is stable enough for the stream. Test that path before building the full pipeline.
Does a Pi 5 always fail at H.264 streaming?
No. The distinction is that Pi 5 lacks platform encode hardware and relies on software encoding; whether a particular workload is viable depends on its settings and the complete FFmpeg pipeline.
