The -stream_loop -1 option repeats an input; it does not create audio, select a track, or make a silent signal audible. Then check that the output matches your actual YouTube ingest protocol: the codec and container requirements below are specifically for HLS, not universal RTMP settings.
1. Check that the VOD contains audio
A video file can play pictures without containing an audio track. Inspect the source file with ffprobe or FFmpeg and check the input inventory shown when FFmpeg starts. If no audio stream is listed, mapping or encoding options cannot restore sound that is not in the file. Use a source with audio or deliberately add a separate audio source.
2. Check FFmpeg’s stream mapping
FFmpeg’s documentation explains that -map determines which input streams are sent to an output. Read the output’s Stream mapping lines and confirm the intended audio stream is routed there; specifying an audio codec alone does not select a source track.
Map the audio track you intend to send
For a single input where its first video and first audio streams are wanted, a typical starting point is:

-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
This is an illustrative mapping, not a tested command for every setup. If there are multiple inputs or audio tracks, inspect the stream inventory and adjust the input and stream indices. For example, -map 0:a? makes the audio mapping optional: if that input has no audio stream, FFmpeg can proceed without one, which may leave the output silent rather than stopping with an error.
3. Distinguish a missing track from a silent signal
If the output mapping includes audio but viewers hear silence, check whether the source actually contains audible sound and whether FFmpeg selected the expected track and channels. An encoded audio stream is not proof that its signal is audible. The information available here does not establish one universal cause for a silent signal that is present in the output, so trace it through the source, selected track, and output rather than assuming YouTube removed it.

4. Confirm whether YouTube ingest is HLS or RTMP
Do not apply HLS settings to an RTMP stream by assumption. Confirm the protocol you configured, then use the matching YouTube guidance. The following requirements and recommendations are for HLS only.
YouTube HLS audio and video requirements
Google’s HLS ingestion guide, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC, specifies muxed audio and video in M2TS, supports H.264 or HEVC video, and identifies AAC audio with a single audio track. YouTube Help’s HLS setup page lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 in its encoder settings and recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. These are HLS-specific details; check YouTube’s applicable RTMP guidance if you use RTMP.

These figures are not general settings for every YouTube ingest protocol.
5. Check HLS delivery only if you use HLS
If your confirmed destination is HLS, check the configured URL, playlist and segment handling, and HTTP responses. The YouTube HLS guide documents errors that can help identify delivery or ingestion problems: 400 for a malformed URL or playlist, 401 for an invalid or expired identifier, 405 for a wrong method, and 500 for a server processing failure. These errors point to a delivery or processing issue; they do not by themselves prove why an otherwise ingested audio signal is silent.

6. Test a short output before leaving a long loop running
- Inspect the source and confirm it has the audio track you expect.
- Run FFmpeg and verify its input inventory and output
Stream mappinginclude that track. - Check a short output locally or in a controlled stream to confirm both video and audible audio are present.
- Only after that check, rely on the longer loop.
This short test is a practical verification step, not a claim that a particular command or stream has been tested.

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping. It repeats the input; it does not add an audio stream, choose an audio track, or guarantee that the repeated signal is audible. Treat looping and audio selection as separate parts of the diagnosis.

Common symptoms and the next check
- No audio stream appears in the input inventory: the VOD may contain no audio. Choose a source with sound or add an audio source.
- The input lists audio, but output mapping does not: review the
-mapoptions and stream indices. - Audio is mapped but the output is silent: check the source signal, intended track, and channels.
- The stream fails to ingest or HLS reports an HTTP error: check the HLS URL, playlist, segment handling, and reported response code.
- You are unsure which codec/container rules apply: confirm whether the destination is HLS or RTMP before changing settings.
