For a YouTube gaming VOD rerun, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with -c copy only when the source files have matching streams, codecs, and time bases, and their duration metadata is reliable. If the files need technical normalization or filtering, use the concat filter and re-encode. Neither method guarantees a seamless boundary: inspect the actual transitions, because mismatched stream lengths or inaccurate durations can create gaps or artifacts.
Choose the concat method that fits your VODs

FFmpeg describes the demuxer as an option “when you want to avoid a re-encode” and the format does not support file-level concatenation. Its requirements are strict: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” A shared .mp4 extension does not prove that files meet those requirements. Prepare and check the gaming VOD files
Before building a playlist, establish whether stream copy is appropriate. Compare the files’ video and audio streams, codecs, time bases, and durations. Also review the content at each cut: technical compatibility cannot correct an edit that starts mid-sentence, cuts off game audio, or jumps between scenes.
- Use the concat demuxer only if the files have compatible streams and timing.
- If the files differ in ways that require filters or normalization, plan to use the concat filter and re-encode.
- Do not assume reported durations are exact. The demuxer uses each file’s duration to position the next one; an incorrect duration can create timestamp artifacts.
- Check whether audio and video streams within a segment end at the same point. The demuxer’s timestamp adjustment can leave gaps when streams do not have exactly matching lengths.
The exact command and output settings depend on the particular VODs. The available FFmpeg and YouTube documentation does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, GOP, or audio configuration for every gaming rerun or encoder setup.

Build a concat playlist for compatible files
Create a plain-text playlist with one file directive per VOD, in the order you want it played. For automatic format recognition, the exact first line must be ffconcat version 1.0; do not put a space or byte-order mark before it.

Use paths and escaping or quoting appropriate to your filenames; FFmpeg documents the playlist syntax and path rules in its concat demuxer documentation. Add a duration directive only when you know a reliable corrected duration to use in place of the file’s stored duration. Do not invent a duration just to suppress a warning.

If the playlist uses paths outside the concat demuxer’s safe-path rules, -safe 0 may be needed. Use it only with a playlist you control.

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy joined.mp4This is a pattern, not a validated command for every source. Confirm that the output container supports the copied codecs, then inspect and play the result—especially the transitions—before sending it to a live endpoint. Because -c copy copies packets without decoding or encoding, it cannot apply filters or reconcile incompatible streams.
Use the concat filter when files need changes
If segments need normalization or filtering, use FFmpeg’s concat filter rather than expecting stream copy to fix them. The filter workflow decodes and re-encodes, so it takes processing time and requires suitable output codec and encoding choices. Those choices depend on the files and destination; there is no single setting established for every gaming VOD rerun.

Re-encoding can address technical differences, but it does not make content continuity automatic. Check frame cadence, audio layout, relative stream lengths, and the actual picture and sound at each boundary. Do not promise a seamless result merely because the output has a common format.

When reading files for live output, FFmpeg’s -re option reads input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1). It is useful when output packet speed matters, such as live streaming. It controls pacing; it does not correct duration metadata, unify codecs, or smooth an edit. See FFmpeg’s main options documentation.

The sources do not specify universal YouTube ingest settings for every encoder or account configuration. Use the settings applicable to your streaming setup, and validate the output and transitions rather than relying on a generic bitrate or resolution recipe.
Understand the loop and the end-of-stream handoff
Concatenation and audience handoff solve different problems. The concat setup determines how files join within your output. YouTube Live Redirect is a separate feature configured in YouTube Studio: it can move viewers from an ending live stream to a Premiere or another live stream. YouTube lists eligibility criteria for creators sending redirects; redirecting to another channel’s live stream also requires that channel’s permission. It acts at stream end, not between VOD files in one stream, so it does not make a concat boundary seamless. See YouTube Help: How to use YouTube Live Redirect.
Troubleshoot gaps and failed joins
The demuxer rejects or mishandles a file
- Likely cause: The files do not have matching streams, codecs, or time bases, even if they share a container extension.
- What to do: Compare the streams. If the differences require decoding, filtering, or normalization, switch to the concat filter and re-encode.
There is a gap or artifact at a boundary
- Likely cause: A stored duration is inaccurate, or streams within a file have unequal lengths.
- What to do: Verify durations and the audio/video endpoints. Use a playlist
durationoverride only when you have a trustworthy corrected value, then rebuild and inspect the output.
The transition still feels abrupt after re-encoding
- Likely cause: The cut itself is discontinuous, or frame cadence, audio layout, stream length, or content timing differs.
- What to do: Review the boundary in the source and output. Normalizing technical properties cannot repair a content edit that needs to be changed.
The file plays too quickly or slowly during live output
- Likely cause: File input is not being paced for live output.
- What to do: Consider
-refor native-frame-rate input pacing. It will not fix a bad concat or inaccurate timestamps.
The playlist path fails
- Likely cause: A path is outside safe-path rules or contains characters that are not escaped or quoted correctly.
- What to do: Correct the playlist syntax using FFmpeg’s documented rules. If needed for paths in a playlist you control, use
-safe 0.
