Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when your playlist files have compatible streams and you want to avoid re-encoding. Use the concat filter when the inputs need to be re-encoded into a consistent output. Neither choice, by itself, keeps a YouTube broadcast stable around the clock: encoding, upload capacity, stream health and recovery are separate concerns.
How to choose between the demuxer and filter
| Decision point | Concat demuxer | Concat filter |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Compatible inputs when avoiding a re-encode matters. | Inputs that need re-encoding or stream normalization. |
| How it joins media | Reads a script and presents packets sequentially as if the files had been muxed together. | Concatenates decoded media through a filter graph; FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends it when re-encoding is needed. |
| Input requirements | Files must have the same streams, codecs and time bases. | Re-encoding can produce a consistent output, but the method is not a guarantee that arbitrary inputs will work without configuring the graph appropriately. |
| Timestamp sensitivity | Stored duration information affects timestamps for following files; inaccurate durations may cause artifacts or gaps. | Requires a valid filter setup and suitable inputs; the official comparison does not establish that it automatically resolves every timestamp issue. |
| Re-encoding | Can avoid re-encoding when inputs are compatible. | Appropriate when re-encoding is required. |
The destination being a 24/7 YouTube Live stream does not change the choice. Decide from the media files and the output you need, then configure and monitor the live encoder separately.
Use the concat demuxer for compatible files
The demuxer reads a text file containing file paths and directives, then sequences the files’ packets. It shifts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and later files follow the preceding file. FFmpeg requires matching streams, codecs and time bases across the files. See the FFmpeg FAQ and concat demuxer documentation for the relevant behavior and syntax.

Create a UTF-8 text file such as playlist.txt, with one file directive per input. For example:

Paths are interpreted relative to the working directory unless you provide absolute paths. Quote paths that contain spaces or special characters; for unusual filenames, consult the demuxer documentation for its escaping rules. The example assumes the files satisfy the demuxer’s compatibility requirements; listing files does not make incompatible streams compatible.
Check durations and test the result
The demuxer uses duration metadata to calculate where the next file begins. If a file’s stored duration is inaccurate, the sequence can develop timestamp problems, artifacts or gaps. The script’s duration directive can override a stored duration when you know the correct value. Check the installed FFmpeg documentation for directive syntax, and test the complete sequence before using it as a live source.

If the files do not match in streams, codecs or time bases, do not assume the demuxer will normalize them. Use a filter-and-encode workflow instead, or prepare compatible inputs first.
Use the concat filter when you need a re-encoded output
FFmpeg’s FAQ identifies the concat filter as the choice for concatenation when re-encoding is needed. This is the more suitable path when source files need to be normalized into a consistent output rather than passed through as compatible packets. Consult the FFmpeg FAQ and the concat filter documentation for current syntax.

Plan the filter graph around the actual media: how many inputs there are, their audio and video streams, and the output streams you intend to produce. Choose the output’s resolution, frame rate, pixel format and audio properties deliberately, then encode to those settings. The concat filter does not mean every mismatch is handled automatically; validate the graph and inspect the resulting file before sending it to YouTube.
Prepare the continuous YouTube Live output
Concatenation is only the media-joining stage. For a live broadcast, configure the encoder and ingest settings independently. YouTube’s live encoder settings currently recommend constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds between keyframes, AAC or MP3 audio, and RTMPS to encrypt data to and through Google’s servers. Recheck the live settings page before launch because platform recommendations can change.

Preflight the stream
- Choose the YouTube Live event’s ingest settings and stream key. Keep the key private; configure your encoder to send to the selected YouTube ingest destination using the stream key for that event.
- Set encoder parameters. Use CBR, set the keyframe interval to two seconds (and never above four seconds under YouTube’s current recommendation), select AAC or MP3 audio, and use RTMPS where supported by the selected ingest configuration.
- Check upload capacity and test before going live. YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable for the available upload connection and testing before launch. A successful local concatenation does not prove the connection can sustain the live output.
- Watch stream health and messages. During the event, monitor YouTube’s stream health indicators and review any messages so ingest or encoding problems are not mistaken for a concat failure.
YouTube transcodes live video into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions, but that does not remove the need to send a correctly configured, stable stream to ingest. FFmpeg’s documentation is regenerated nightly and corresponds to its newest revision; if an installed build behaves differently, check that build’s local documentation as well as the online FFmpeg documentation.

Concatenating a playlist once creates a sequence; it does not make that sequence repeat forever. For continuous playback, make looping an explicit part of your FFmpeg input or process design, and test that the transition from the playlist’s end back to its beginning is clean. The appropriate loop arrangement depends on whether you are feeding a file or live output and on your FFmpeg build, so verify the current option syntax in the installed FFmpeg help and documentation rather than assuming the concat method itself loops.

Before using documentaries in a live playlist, confirm you have the rights to stream each recording on YouTube. A technical ability to rebroadcast a video is not permission to do so, and YouTube’s copyright policies apply to live streams as well as uploaded videos. Review the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a channel around third-party material.
Troubleshooting common failures
- Demuxer reports mismatched streams or fails to open the sequence: Compare the inputs’ stream layout, codecs and time bases. The demuxer requires these to match; prepare compatible files or use a concat-filter workflow with re-encoding.
- Artifacts, gaps or timestamp warnings at a join: Check the files’ duration metadata. The demuxer uses durations to place subsequent timestamps; correct inaccurate metadata or use the documented
durationdirective when you know the proper duration. - Filter output has unexpected audio or video: Inspect the filter graph’s input streams and output mapping. Confirm that each input contributes the intended audio and video and that the chosen output settings are consistent.
- Local output works but YouTube reports poor stream health: Treat this as an ingest, encoder or upload-capacity issue rather than proof that concatenation is wrong. Check CBR, keyframe interval, audio codec, RTMPS, available upload capacity and YouTube’s event messages.
- The live video stops after the playlist ends: Concatenation does not imply looping. Check the explicit loop behavior in the FFmpeg process and test a complete end-to-start transition before leaving it unattended.
