Felice Beato’s best-known photographs connected with India’s 1857 uprising show the aftermath of fighting, especially the damaged buildings and remains at Lucknow—not battles unfolding before the camera. Most were made in 1858, after the siege. Their documentary value is real, but so is the influence of colonial captions, image-making choices and the collections that preserved them.
Did Beato photograph the fighting?
No. The photographs most closely associated with the uprising were made chiefly in 1858, after the siege of Lucknow. The National Army Museum says Beato’s India expedition ran from 1858 to 1860 to document the aftermath of the Indian Mutiny, with his most important work focused on Lucknow. The Metropolitan Museum also dates his India photographs to 1858, after the siege. Contemporary photographic technology could not capture movement clearly, a constraint that helps explain the emphasis on ruins and still scenes rather than action. The Metropolitan Museum says the pictures may have been among the first photographs to show battlefield corpses. That is a qualified claim about priority, not evidence that Beato recorded the fighting as it happened.
What the photographs show
Ruins at the Lucknow Residency
Wellcome Collection catalogs Beato’s photograph of the Lucknow Residency as showing ruins caused during the rebellion. Its record dates the image to 1858 and places it in the series The Indian Rebellion, 1857: after the siege of Lucknow. The object is listed as one photograph on an album page. Lucknow’s buildings and military sites
The National Army Museum identifies Beato’s 1858 photograph “Gateway of the small Emaum Bara” as a view in Lucknow. The Science Museum Group catalogue also lists Beato photographs of a battery of artillery in 1858 and a Bridge of Boats over the Goomtee at Lucknow, dated circa 1857. Those dates and attributions are catalogue descriptions; the bridge’s circa-1857 date should not be treated as proof that the image depicts fighting in progress. Beyond Lucknow
Beato’s India work was not limited to ruined architecture in Lucknow. The Harry Ransom Center describes a collection of 27 photographs by or attributed to him: 26 albumen prints and one salted-paper print. The views are primarily architectural, mainly in Lucknow, with additional views in Kolkata and Delhi documenting the rebellion’s aftermath. The collection also includes work from other regions and later conflicts, so its 27 images should not all be counted as photographs of the uprising. Harry Ransom Center collection.

Other surviving material includes portraits and military subjects. The British Library’s Photo 165 catalogue describes five copy prints associated with Beato and the Mutiny, including portraits of military figures; the catalogue gives a date range of 1857–1859 and a date of circa 1858. A copy print or an image attributed to Beato is not the same thing as an authenticated original print, so provenance matters when comparing photographs. British Library photographs catalogue.
Why the Secundra Bagh image is controversial
One of the most disturbing images is catalogued under the period title “Interior of the Secundra Bagh after the slaughter of 2000 rebels by H.M. 73rd Highlanders, Lucknow, 24th Punjab Infantry.” The title’s casualty figure is a historical caption, not a count independently verified by the photograph.

In an essay by Kate Rhodes, Assistant Curator of Photography at the NGV, Beato is described as having posed figures with a horse among ruins, skulls and bones. The essay says he had remains disinterred and arranged to heighten the image’s impact. This account concerns the Secundra Bagh photograph; it is not a basis for assuming that every Beato photograph was staged. NGV essay.
How to read the photographs as historical evidence
These pictures are neither transparent windows onto the uprising nor meaningless fabrications. They document places and material damage, while also reflecting choices about what to photograph, how to arrange a scene, what a caption calls it and how an image was later collected and presented. The NGV essay discusses colonial photographs as news, historical documentation and propaganda, and as evidence of victory and power. That framing makes the image and its caption worth examining separately.

- Look at the subject and location. A ruined building, military view or portrait answers a different question; a Lucknow image should not be generalized to every place affected by the rebellion.
- Check the date and provenance. Collection records may describe an original, a copy print or an image attributed to Beato. Catalogue dates are useful evidence, but retain their qualifications, such as “circa.”
- Separate visible detail from caption claims. A photograph can show remains or damage; it cannot by itself establish the caption’s precise casualty count or explain how a scene came to look as it does.
- Ask what the frame leaves out. Ruins can make imperial victory and destruction visible while excluding the living people, causes and consequences beyond the camera’s view.
Viewing and reusing collection images
Wellcome Collection marks its Residency image with the Public Domain Mark and supplies the credit line: “Wellcome Collection. Public Domain Mark. Source: Wellcome Collection.” That status applies to the specific record, not automatically to every image of Beato in another collection. Check the rights and credit information on the individual object page before reusing an image.
