Who was Federica “Kikka” Cavenati?
Cavenati was a fashion designer known to friends and colleagues as Kikka. She founded 16Arlington with Marco Capaldo, her business and life partner. The Guardian reported that the pair met while studying fashion at Istituto Marangoni’s London arm.
They named their label after the London street where they shared their first studio. The British Fashion Council’s 2020 London Fashion Week handbook dates the brand’s launch to September 2017.
What was 16Arlington known for?
The label became associated with expressive eveningwear and red-carpet looks, often featuring sequins and feathers. The British Fashion Council’s 2020 profile describes an early aesthetic that brought together Cavenati’s minimalism and clean lines with Capaldo’s crystals, sequins and glamour. That is a historical account of the label’s beginnings, not a definitive division of authorship for every design.

In the handbook, Cavenati summed up their approach as “everything for us is always high octane, and more is more.” The label’s party-ready clothes appeared on red carpets and dance floors. The handbook also listed early stockists including Bergdorf Goodman, Lane Crawford, Selfridges and Penelope; those listings reflect the profile’s 2020 publication, not current availability.
What illness did Cavenati have?
Her family said she died after a short illness. British Vogue described it as short and sudden, while The Guardian’s 5 November 2021 report said the family statement reported that she had died “last month.” The reviewed public accounts do not identify the illness or a specific cause of death, so more detailed claims are not established by those reports.

How friends remembered her
In a first-person British Vogue tribute published on 5 November 2021, actor and writer Lena Dunham recalled Cavenati’s playful approach to clothes and her skill in sewing, draping and fit. Dunham described a custom orange-sequin gown with hot-pink marabou trim and satin pajamas with feathered cuffs; these are details from her personal recollection.
Dunham wrote, “Kikka lived to help other women recognise their beauty, and that quality was inherent to her own.” The Guardian also quoted Stephanie Phair, then chair of the British Fashion Council, calling Cavenati “the best possible example of what it is to be a designer, brand founder and creative.”
