What did the FCC announce?
On February 20, 2026, Carr announced the Pledge America Campaign in support of the Salute to America 250 Task Force and the country’s 250th anniversary, which falls on July 4, 2026. The campaign calls on broadcasters to air patriotic, “pro-America” programming about the American journey and its historic accomplishments. The chairman’s announcement presents broadcasters as able to lend their voices to the initiative.
Carr described the anniversary as an occasion to reflect on the country’s founding ideals and history. That is the campaign’s stated rationale: the announcement says broadcasters can provide programming responsive to the needs and interests of their local communities and support civic education around the anniversary.
Does the campaign require stations to air the Pledge?
No new requirement is established by the announcement. Carr’s statement is an appeal to broadcasters to participate in a campaign; it does not show that the FCC adopted a rule ordering stations to air the Pledge, the national anthem, or any other specified material. A contemporary Ars Technica report likewise describes participation as voluntary.

That distinction matters: a suggested programming idea is not the same as a binding programming rule. The available announcement and report do not establish an enforcement action or penalty for a station that declines to participate.
What programming did Carr’s campaign suggest?
Examples reported in connection with the campaign span daily openings, civic education, local history, and music. They are possible ways to take part, not a checklist every station must follow.

- Start the broadcast day: Air the Star-Spangled Banner or Pledge of Allegiance.
- Explain civic ideas and history: Run public-service announcements, short segments, or specials focused on civic education and American history.
- Build history into regular news: Include historical segments in ongoing news programming.
- Highlight local places: Feature significant local sites, including National Park Service locations.
- Share American music: Air music by American composers.
- Offer a daily history feature: Provide a “Today in American History” announcement.
The official release gives the campaign a broad scope, describing programming that celebrates the American journey and highlights historic accomplishments from the nation’s founding through the present administration. It does not prescribe a format, frequency, or specific script for participating stations.

The announcement and contemporary report do not establish how many broadcasters took part or what they ultimately aired. They also do not document subsequent campaign activity. The campaign’s announcement should therefore be understood as a request and set of examples, not proof that stations adopted a daily pledge or other programming.
