The FBI-released video shows a distant figure in dark clothing running across a Utah Valley University rooftop, lowering himself over the edge and fleeing on foot after Charlie Kirk was fatally shot. The clip is significant surveillance evidence, but it is not a clear facial-identification video and does not by itself prove the charged suspect’s guilt.
What the FBI video shows
The FBI-released video shows a distant figure in dark clothing running across a rooftop at Utah Valley University, reaching the edge, lowering himself over the side, dropping to the ground and leaving the area on foot. The FBI identified the person in the footage as the shooter; news reports generally used the more legally cautious terms “suspect” or “suspected gunman.”
The clip does not show the fatal shooting itself, and it is not a clear facial-identification video. Its significance is the movement it appears to capture immediately after the shooting: a person leaving the rooftop that authorities said was the source of the fatal shot.
The footage was released publicly by the FBI on September 11, 2025, one day after Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during an outdoor speaking event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The release came while investigators were asking the public for information during the manhunt.

The rooftop escape shown in the clip
Descriptions of the footage say the subject reached the rooftop at approximately noon Mountain Time on September 10, 2025. After the shooting, the figure ran across the roof toward its edge. Rather than simply jumping from a standing position, the person appears to use his hands to lower himself over the side before dropping to the ground and fleeing on foot.
That detail matters because the video is best understood as surveillance evidence showing an alleged escape route—not as a standalone recording that identifies the person’s face or proves every element of the prosecution’s case.
The FBI also said investigators recovered a firearm and ammunition in a wooded area near the university. According to the agency, investigators collected trace evidence from the rooftop, including shoe impressions, a forearm imprint and a palm print. Those are law-enforcement statements about the investigation and should not be treated as independently established conclusions merely because they appear alongside the video.

The FBI separately released photographs and requested public tips. Later identification of Tyler James Robinson depended on the broader investigation and subsequent evidence, not on the rooftop clip alone. It is therefore inaccurate to say that the video itself “proves” Robinson committed the shooting.

What happened after the video was released
Robinson was taken into custody on September 12, 2025, according to contemporaneous reporting. Prosecutors charged him on September 16 with aggravated murder and announced that they intended to seek the death penalty if the case proceeded and resulted in a qualifying conviction.
Robinson is charged in connection with Kirk’s killing. He has not been convicted, and descriptions of him as the “convicted killer” or as an adjudicated “assassin” would be inaccurate.
What the July 2026 hearing added
The later court proceeding was a five-day preliminary hearing held July 6–10, 2026. It was not the trial. The purpose was to decide whether prosecutors had presented enough evidence—probable cause—to send the case forward to trial, rather than whether the state had proved guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
At the hearing, investigators and prosecutors discussed a larger compilation of surveillance footage. Prosecutors said it traced movements they attributed to Robinson before and after the shooting, including his alleged access to the roof, his position there around the time of the shot and his departure over the roof’s edge.

ABC News reported that the compilation appeared to track nearly every movement prosecutors attributed to Robinson. The defense objected that publicly presenting the evidence could prejudice a future jury. The Associated Press reported testimony that Robinson walked around campus, bought food, contacted people associated with Kirk’s organization, later returned in different clothing and went to the rooftop. These are descriptions of prosecution evidence and testimony, not judicial findings that Robinson is guilty.
The hearing ended without an immediate bind-over ruling. According to updates from Utah County and reporting on the proceeding, written briefing was to follow, with final oral arguments scheduled for September 1, 2026, as of the research period. The procedural status could change as the court rules.

How to watch and describe the footage responsibly
The video concerns a politically prominent killing and may be disturbing. The rooftop clip should be presented as surveillance footage released by investigators, with the FBI’s September 11, 2025 release date clearly identified. A responsible presentation should:
- Use only the shortest excerpt needed to explain the escape route.
- Avoid replaying or displaying the fatal shooting itself.
- Make clear that the figure is distant and that the video is not a facial-identification recording.
- Attribute claims about the shooter’s identity, recovered evidence and the escape route to the FBI or prosecutors.
- Explain that the July 2026 proceeding was a preliminary hearing, not a trial.
- Avoid speculative frame-by-frame claims that the image quality cannot support.
