They belong to different periods and serve funerary purposes in different ways. Fayoum portraits, made mainly in Roman Egypt from the first to third centuries CE, bring a face close to the viewer. Tomb paintings span many centuries and form part of the architecture and ritual setting of a burial place.
What is the difference between Fayoum mummy portraits and Egyptian tomb paintings?
The simplest distinction is the object each image belongs to. A Fayoum portrait is a small image of a person, painted on a panel or, in some cases, linen and incorporated into the mummy’s wrappings. A tomb painting is painted onto a prepared wall or chamber surface as part of a larger decorative program.
That difference affects how to read them. The portrait centers on an individual face and accompanies a particular mummy. Tomb decoration can combine the deceased, offerings, ritual or ceremonial activity, daily life, plants, animals, and texts across one or more walls. Both are funerary art, but they are not interchangeable examples of one style or one period.
| Feature | Fayoum mummy portraits | Egyptian tomb paintings |
|---|---|---|
| Typical setting | Attached to mummy coverings | Prepared walls or chambers within a tomb |
| Date range in the cited sources | Principally the first to third centuries CE; the National Archaeological Museum, Athens, allows a possible extension into the fourth century | The Met’s Western Thebes corpus spans approximately 2000–1100 BCE; tomb paintings also come from other periods |
| Support | Wood panel or linen | Plastered wall or chamber surface |
| Typical focus | An individual, naturalistic face | A broader funerary program of scenes and texts |
| Funerary role | Part of the mummy’s funerary equipment | Associated with the deceased’s burial setting, offerings, cult, and afterlife beliefs |
They were made in different historical periods
Fayoum portraits are generally dated to the first through third centuries CE, during the Roman period in Egypt. The National Archaeological Museum in Athens notes that the tradition may extend into the fourth century. That qualified range is preferable to treating every portrait as if it had one exact date.

The Met’s collection of Western Thebes tomb paintings covers approximately 2000–1100 BCE, a span of about nine centuries. That chronology describes the cited Theban corpus, not every painted tomb in Egypt. Tomb paintings were made in other periods as well, so “Egyptian tomb painting” is a broad category rather than a single contemporary counterpart to the Fayoum portraits.
The practical consequence is that the comparison is not a contest between two styles produced at the same time. It compares a Roman-period portrait tradition with a long, varied history of tomb decoration. Dates, sites, patrons, and funerary practices differ across the objects grouped under those labels.
One is a portable image; the other belongs to the tomb’s architecture
Portraits were fitted to mummy coverings
A Fayoum portrait is typically a face-level image made on wood or linen and placed with the mummy. Its scale and placement bring attention to one person rather than mapping out an entire burial chamber. The image’s physical relationship to the mummy is central: it was funerary equipment, not simply a standalone panel displayed in a room.

Tomb paintings occupy prepared walls and chambers
Tomb paintings are applied to prepared surfaces within a burial place. Because they belong to the architecture, their meaning can develop across registers, walls, and multiple surfaces. A viewer encounters them as part of a chamber or chapel rather than as a single panel carried with a mummy.
The difference in setting also changes what survives and what can be seen. A portrait is a discrete object associated with a body; a wall painting is part of a built funerary environment. Neither format alone tells the whole story of its original viewing conditions, but the support and setting distinguish their intended roles.
The materials overlap in paint, but the supports and methods differ
Fayoum portraits were painted on wood using encaustic, in which pigment is bound with wax, or tempera. Some examples use tempera on linen. It would be inaccurate to say that all portraits were encaustic, or that one recipe defines the whole tradition.

Ancient Egyptian tomb paintings used pigments on prepared, plastered surfaces. The exact materials and procedures were not uniform across all periods and sites. In other words, “panel portrait” and “wall painting” describe more than just different subjects: they indicate different supports and working contexts, while leaving room for variation within each group.
The portraits emphasize individual faces; tomb programs range across subjects
Fayoum portraits are widely recognized for naturalistic individual faces and direct gazes, features associated with Greco-Roman painting conventions. Their attention to a person’s features makes them feel immediate to modern viewers. That impression should not be mistaken for evidence that every portrait looks alike, or that the portraits were made for the same purpose as a modern framed likeness.
Tomb paintings can show the deceased, offerings, ritual and ceremonial scenes, and aspects of daily activity, including flora and fauna. The range reflects the breadth of tomb decoration: its subject matter is not limited to one repeated scene, nor does every tomb contain the same program. A portrait foregrounds a face; a tomb’s decoration can set the deceased within a larger funerary and ritual world.

It is also misleading to call Fayoum portraits simply “Egyptian style” and tomb painting a single contrasting style. The portraits combine Greco-Roman painting conventions with an Egyptian funerary purpose. Tomb art itself varies by date, location, patron, and chamber.

The portrait accompanies the mummy
The portrait became part of the mummy’s funerary equipment. Its close association with the body explains why it can be both a recognizable likeness and an object embedded in Egyptian burial practice. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes the portraits as “at once Greco-Roman in their painting style and intrinsically Egyptian in their purpose.” That formulation captures the distinction between visual convention and funerary function without forcing the portraits into only one cultural category.
Wall scenes participate in a funerary setting
Tomb decoration worked within the burial place and was connected to offerings, the deceased’s cult, and beliefs about the afterlife. It could affirm life as well as address death. In its discussion of the Raemkai tomb chapel, the Met calls affirmation of life “one of the main aims of all Egyptian funerary art.” The statement refers to that funerary-art interpretation; it should not be read as a claim that all tomb programs used identical images or had only one purpose.

The contrast, then, is not “portrait equals personal” and “wall equals religious.” Both are personal and funerary in context. Rather, a portrait associates a face with the mummy, while tomb decoration acts across the burial environment through scenes, objects, and texts.
Why are they called “Fayoum” portraits?
“Fayoum portrait” is a conventional name associated with important discoveries and collections from the Fayum region. The Met notes that portraits from Hawara and er-Rubayat form some of the largest groups, helping explain the label. The name should not be taken to mean that every portrait was found in the Fayum: Cairo museum material also records finds in other parts of Egypt.
The label is useful, but it can obscure the broader geography of the finds. When describing an individual object, its documented findspot is more precise than assuming that it came from the Fayum solely because it is called a Fayoum portrait.
How to compare the two without flattening their differences
- Start with the date. A Roman-period Fayoum portrait and a tomb wall from the Met’s Western Thebes corpus may be separated by many centuries.
- Identify the support. Ask whether the image is on a panel or linen associated with a mummy, or painted on a prepared architectural surface.
- Look at the scale of the composition. A portrait centers on an individual face; tomb decoration can organize multiple scenes across a chamber.
- Separate appearance from purpose. Greco-Roman visual conventions do not make a Fayoum portrait non-Egyptian in funerary function.
- Allow for variation. Neither every portrait nor every tomb program follows one medium, recipe, subject, or style.
These checks help avoid the most common false equivalences: treating the works as contemporaneous, assuming a single medium for all portraits, or using “Egyptian art” as if it named one stable visual style across millennia.
