The Commonwealth Foundation says Basher is a writer of Bengali origin from Bangladesh and that she is the first Bangladeshi writer to win the Asia regional award.
What did Faria Basher win?
Basher’s award was the Asia regional prize, one of five regional awards in the competition. The Foundation’s prize archive lists £2,500 for each regional winner and £5,000 for the overall winner. The awards recognize different levels of the competition: Basher won for Asia, while Chanel Sutherland took the 2025 overall prize.
The Commonwealth Foundation reported 7,920 entries worldwide in 2025, which it described as a record. Its interim impact report counts 536 entries from Asia. The other regional totals were 3,243 from Africa, 2,332 from Canada and Europe, 1,148 from the Caribbean, and 661 from the Pacific.
What is “An Eye and a Leg” about?
The Commonwealth Foundation describes the story as a darkly humorous, surreal take on the idea of the “expiring” South Asian woman, with macabre elements. Its Asia regional judge, Saras Manickam, says the story sets social expectations against the expectations of an individual woman. Granta identifies it as the 2025 Asia-winning entry and publishes the story online.
