Sunday update, August 3, 2025: The Fantastic Four: First Steps remained No. 1 at the North American box office in its second weekend, with an estimated $40 million—down 66% from its $117.6 million opening weekend. The Naked Gun opened in third place with an estimated $17 million for the Friday–Sunday frame.
How much did The Fantastic Four: First Steps drop?
The film’s estimated North American weekend gross fell 66% in its second weekend, from $117.6 million on its opening weekend to $40 million for Friday through Sunday, August 1–3, 2025. Despite the decline, it held the No. 1 position. These were Sunday estimates reported by the Associated Press, not final weekend totals; AP said final domestic figures were expected Monday. AP’s August 3 report also quoted Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian: “The movie’s box office drop off was surprising given its strong reviews.”
Where did The Naked Gun rank, and what did it earn?
The Naked Gun opened in third place, behind The Fantastic Four: First Steps and The Bad Guys 2. Its estimated opening-weekend gross was $17 million for the same North American Friday–Sunday period, according to AP. That is an opening-weekend estimate, so it should not be treated as a final total.
Why a Sunday daily total is different
The Numbers’ domestic daily chart lists The Naked Gun at $4,555,351 for Sunday, August 3, and $16,805,560 through Sunday. The latter is the chart’s cumulative figure through that day, not a finalized weekend report. It differs from AP’s rounded $17 million Sunday estimate because the sources report the figures in different formats and the weekend total was still preliminary. The Numbers’ August 3 daily chart is useful for the day’s gross and the running total, but it is not the same measure as a final Friday–Sunday result.

What the weekend figures do—and do not—show
The figures describe estimated ticket sales in U.S. and Canadian theaters for August 1–3, 2025. The 66% decline compares The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ second weekend with its opening weekend; The Naked Gun’s $17 million figure is for its opening weekend. Because the films were at different release stages, their grosses are not like-for-like comparisons. The available figures establish the ranking and reported estimates, but do not by themselves explain why Fantastic Four’s second-weekend gross fell.
