Fallout is a post-apocalyptic role-playing game franchise and shared fictional universe. To choose a game, start with the setting and play style that interest you: New Vegas for the Mojave, Fallout 4 for Boston and the Commonwealth, or Fallout 76 for Appalachia and online play. The Prime Video series tells its own story in that same universe; you do not need to play a game before watching it.
What is Fallout?
Fallout imagines a history in which a nuclear exchange called the Great War devastates the world in 2077. Survivors emerge from underground Vaults into a landscape of scattered communities, dangerous creatures and factions competing over resources and power.
The games share that setting, but they do not follow one continuous group of protagonists. Each installment introduces a different character and local crisis. Bethesda’s official franchise timeline traces the series’ recurring features back to the original 1997 game: the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. character-stat system, companions, the Brotherhood of Steel, ghouls, deathclaws, radscorpions and Super Mutants.
The Prime Video adaptation also takes place in the games’ universe, but follows its own characters and plot. Bethesda’s 2024 announcement introduces Lucy, a Vault 33 resident who leaves after events put her family at risk. The connection is a shared world, not a retelling of one game.

Fallout games in in-universe chronological order
This is the order of the major games’ settings according to Bethesda’s official timeline—not a required play order. The final column suggests an entry point based on the place or experience you want.

Where should you start with Fallout?
Choose New Vegas for the Mojave
Fallout: New Vegas is the most direct game match if the Mojave setting draws you to the television series. Bethesda’s guide to the show points viewers toward New Vegas and identifies the Mojave as the setting associated with season two. The game itself centers on a Courier pulled into a regional power struggle.
Choose Fallout 4 for Boston
Fallout 4 is set in the Commonwealth around Boston. Bethesda’s companion guide also connects it to the series through Boston, Vault 111 and Dogmeat. It is a natural choice if you want the Boston-area setting or a story about a survivor searching for family.

Choose Fallout 76 for online Appalachia
Fallout 76 takes place in Appalachia and is the online option among these entry points. Bethesda describes its world as one where other surviving humans are real people—other players—rather than only characters controlled by the game.
Choose the original games for the earliest stories
If you want the franchise’s beginnings and an earlier point in its history, start with Fallout (1997), then Fallout 2. Bethesda’s timeline places them in 2161 and 2241, respectively, well before the settings of Fallout 3, New Vegas and Fallout 4.

What order should you play the Fallout games in?
The in-universe order is the table above, starting with Fallout 76. It is a chronology, not a prerequisite list: Bethesda’s timeline presents separate protagonists and crises across the games, and the provided official descriptions do not prescribe one mandatory play sequence.
For a setting-led route, pick the game that matches your interest rather than starting with the earliest date. If you want to follow the mainline timeline, use the table as a guide, keeping in mind that it includes Fallout 76 as an online prequel and places it before the other listed games.

How the Fallout TV series connects to the games
The series uses the games’ universe, familiar kinds of places and shared elements, including Vault-Tec experiments, ghouls, factions and companions. It has its own central characters, so prior game knowledge is not presented as a viewing requirement. Bethesda’s guide treats the show as a way for viewers to explore related parts of the franchise: Boston and Dogmeat point toward Fallout 4, while the Mojave points toward New Vegas.
Bethesda describes the show as taking place more than 200 years after the familiar world ends. Season two continues into the Mojave and New Vegas, linking its setting to the 2010 game without making the show a simple adaptation of that game’s plot.
Where to watch Fallout, and when is season 3?
As of October 4, 2026, Amazon’s updated guide says all episodes of seasons one and two are available on Prime Video. Amazon’s season-three guide, updated June 19, 2026, says season three is coming but gives no release date. Streaming availability can vary by location and change, so check the service where you live.
