The Act is a scripted, fictionalized drama—not a documentary or a scene-by-scene record. Its broad outline follows reported events in Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s life: years of unnecessary medical treatment, an earlier attempt to escape her mother’s control, an online relationship with Nicholas Godejohn, and the killing of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. But some characters and discovery details were changed, and the series’ 2019 ending is not Gypsy’s current status: she was released on parole in December 2023.
What is true about the story behind The Act?
TIME describes the series as a fictionalized account of the Blanchard case. In its broad strokes, it depicts a reported pattern of medical deception and abuse, Gypsy’s efforts to get away, her relationship with Godejohn, Dee Dee’s killing, and the investigation that followed. TIME reports that Gypsy was found healthy after her mother’s death and that the claimed illnesses had been used to control her.
The show’s creator, Nick Antosca, told Rotten Tomatoes that the production aimed to portray the medical procedures and their day-to-day impact: “And, also, to be accurate about what happened: the fact that she underwent all these medical procedures, that she had her teeth extracted, she had this feeding tube, that it was medical abuse on a day-to-day basis. It was important that we portray the truth of what happened to her.” That statement describes the creators’ aim; it does not make every scene or conversation a verified record. Which characters and events were changed?
The neighbors and the discovery
TIME reports that Mel and Lacey are fictionalized versions of real neighbors Amy Pinegar and Aleah Woodmansee. The real-life discovery also differed from the show’s depiction: another neighbor, David Blanchard, climbed through a window to investigate. TIME says sheriff’s deputies found Dee Dee’s body at the Springfield, Missouri, home on June 14, 2015.

Scenes and dialogue
A scripted drama reconstructs private moments, and the available reporting does not verify every conversation or motive shown onscreen. Treat dialogue and scene details as dramatization unless they are independently attributed to a person or a record. The case’s broad outline can be grounded in reporting without assuming that every scene happened exactly as depicted. (TIME)
Did Gypsy try to escape before meeting Godejohn?
Yes. TIME reports that in 2011, when Gypsy was 19, she went to a science-fiction convention and met a man she had contacted online. Dee Dee found them in a hotel room and took Gypsy home. TIME quotes Gypsy’s later account of what followed: “She physically chained me to the bed, and put bells on the doors, and told anybody that I probably would have trusted that I was going through a phase, and to tell her if I was doing anything behind her back.” This is Gypsy’s recollection as quoted by TIME, not a court finding established in the sources cited here.

That earlier episode matters to the timeline: the escape attempt preceded Gypsy’s relationship with Godejohn. It should not be collapsed into the later events simply because the series presents them as parts of one story. (TIME)
What is reported about Dee Dee’s killing?
According to the probable-cause statement described by the Associated Press, Gypsy supplied a knife and hid in a bathroom while Godejohn stabbed Dee Dee. Keep that account distinct from dramatized details: AP is reporting what the statement said, rather than offering a scene-by-scene comparison with the series.

The criminal cases produced different outcomes. Court TV reports that Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a 10-year sentence. Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole. AP reported that Gypsy was released on parole in December 2023, after The Act first aired. No official diagnosis is established in these sources. The case has often been discussed using the older term “Munchausen syndrome by proxy” or the newer term “factitious disorder imposed on another,” but TIME says Dee Dee cannot be officially diagnosed after death. ABC News described the case as likely involving the condition in a 2024 program announcement; that is not a posthumous clinical finding. The careful description is that Dee Dee was suspected of behavior consistent with factitious disorder imposed on another, not that she was definitively diagnosed. (TIME; ABC News)
