In “Fear of the End,” Kristen, David, and Kristen’s daughters and baby Timothy start over in Rome, while Ben takes a job in New York. Leland survives, imprisoned in the silent monastery; the final glimpse of Timothy’s glowing eyes and pointed teeth makes clear that the family’s new beginning is not a clean escape from evil.

The episode begins with memories of earlier cases as the team burns files rather than leave them in Vatican hands. At the Bouchard home, the girls use their old augmented-reality goggles to play Mother Midnight. Their fears become visions that warn them and help them recognize the danger to Kristen.
Leland gets into the house, and Kristen nearly strangles him. David and Ben stop her before she repeats the killing she committed earlier in the series. They take Leland to the silent monastery from “S Is for Silence,” where the old cabinet—reputed to have held a demon—becomes his prison. Sister Andrea and Fenna stay to watch him.

The Church ends the assessor program, scattering the team even as it leaves them with new work. Kristen, David, her daughters, and Timothy move to Rome to help rebuild the Vatican’s assessor program. Ben accepts a lucrative job in New York and promises to visit. The friends’ lives diverge, but the finale does not suggest their relationships are simply over.
Why doesn’t Kristen kill Leland?
Kristen’s near-strangling of Leland puts the finale’s moral choice in physical terms: she could take revenge, but doing so would repeat her earlier killing. Co-creator Robert King told TV Guide that killing Leland would undermine the show’s concern with forgiveness and the soul. The cabinet gives the story a more peculiar answer than either forgiveness or ordinary punishment: Leland remains alive, but is shut away under watch.
Rank #2
TV Guide critic Kelly Connolly reads the outcome as a strange, comic alternative to the usual catharsis of killing a villain. That is the review’s interpretation, not a settled meaning the finale requires every viewer to accept. The cabinet also works as a callback to the monastery episode, turning a bit of the show’s supernatural lore into the final consequence for Leland.
What does the last scene with baby Timothy mean?
In Rome, Timothy shows Kristen his glowing eyes and pointed teeth. She notices, gives him his pacifier, and hides what she has seen from David. The family has reached a place of relative safety and purpose, but Kristen’s choice to carry on rather than announce the discovery leaves the danger inside the family unresolved.
Rank #3
Katja Herbers, who plays Kristen, said she did not want her character’s response to be a simple gasp of fear. She proposed the pacifier-and-pretense reaction and described the show as having “amusement within the horror of it all.” Herbers’ TV Guide interview helps explain why the ending can be unsettling and tender at once: Kristen does not stop being a mother when she sees something frightening.
Is the ending a real conclusion or a cliffhanger?
It is both a conclusion to the characters’ immediate situations and an open door to stories the series will not show. Kristen and David have a shared future in Rome, Ben has a new life in New York, and Leland is contained. Timothy’s appearance, however, prevents the move from feeling like a final victory over the supernatural.
Paramount+ canceled Evil; TV Guide reported that four additional episodes were granted to wrap up major storylines. The Kings discussed ideas they might have pursued in a fifth season, including another monastery story involving the hum of underground Bitcoin-mining machinery and its effects on people nearby. Michelle King said, “evil has not been conquered in the world,” and that there was more story to tell. Those comments describe unrealized possibilities and openness to continuation—not an announced fifth season or revival. TV Guide’s interview with the Kings

Kelly Connolly’s TV Guide review describes Evil as a procedural that mixes psychological horror, goofy humor, and earnest contemplation. In that reading, individual cases let the series keep returning to questions about religion, morality, unreliable institutions, and social problems without pretending that every mystery has a neat explanation. Connolly also connects the show’s move from CBS to Paramount+ with a shift in its comic texture and streaming-era language; that is a critic’s assessment, not a measured consensus.
The finale carries that identity into its last choices. It gives Kristen and David a new purpose without making the family’s future uncomplicated, lets Ben choose a practical new path, and denies Kristen the clean revenge of killing Leland. Even its most ominous image arrives with a comic domestic gesture: a pacifier offered to a baby whose supernatural signs are impossible to mistake.
