Fallout is a retro-futurist post-apocalyptic world built around one defining event: nuclear war in 2077. Its games and Prime Video series share that universe, but tell stories in different places and eras. You do not need to play the games in release order—or finish any game—to understand the show.
What is the Fallout universe?
Fallout imagines an alternate future shaped by the look and anxieties of the Atomic Age: optimistic retro technology sits alongside nuclear destruction, scarcity and social collapse. Bethesda describes the franchise’s style as a dark look at an Atomic-era retro future. The Great War of 2077 is the turning point; the stories follow people and communities trying to live in the world it leaves behind.
The setting is not one continuous wasteland or a single uninterrupted plot. Each game visits a different region and moment, with its own local conflicts, characters and choices. A familiar faction or creature may recur, but the experience and story can change substantially from one entry to another.
What changed after the Great War?
The Great War transformed everyday life into a divide between those who survived in underground shelters and those who endured the surface. The television series’ premise makes that contrast personal: its central character, Lucy, leaves Vault 33 after the shelter fails to protect her and her family. Above ground, settlements and factions have formed amid the ruins, and survival often depends on scarce resources and uneasy alliances.

For a sense of the named main games’ fictional chronology, Bethesda’s official timeline gives this sequence. These are in-world dates, not release dates, and the list is not an exhaustive account of every spin-off or canonical event:
| In-world order | Game | Setting year or timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fallout 76 | 25 years after the Great War of 2077 |
| 2 | Fallout | 2161 |
| 3 | Fallout 2 | 2241 |
| 4 | Fallout 3 | 2277 |
| 5 | Fallout: New Vegas | 2281 |
| 6 | Fallout 4 | 2287 |
These dates are Bethesda/Fallout’s published chronology for the titles shown on its official Fallout timeline. They help place the stories relative to one another; they are not a recommended play order.

Are the Fallout show and games connected?
Yes. Bethesda says the Prime Video series is set in the same universe as the role-playing games. Its April 12, 2024 announcement describes the show as taking place “over 200 years after the world, as we know it, ends.” That connects the series to the games’ setting and history, but the show is not presented as an adaptation of one particular game’s plot.
The series can therefore serve as an introduction rather than homework. It brings viewers into a world of vaults, wasteland communities and competing factions, while the games tell their own regional stories. Bethesda’s Beyond the Show guide links the show’s locations and motifs to game settings. Its current guide says Season 2 moves to the Mojave, the region of Fallout: New Vegas; that is a connection between settings, not a requirement to play the game first.

What are Vault-Tec and the vault experiments?
Vault-Tec is the corporation behind the underground shelters known as Vaults. They are more than refuges: Bethesda’s guide characterizes each Vault as the product of an experiment, making the shelters a recurring way for Fallout stories to explore control, isolation and what people do under pressure.
- Vault 33: The shelter at the center of the television series and Lucy’s starting point.
- Vault 111: In Fallout 4, its experiment involves cryostasis.
The examples differ, but the underlying idea is consistent: a Vault’s rules and purpose can shape the lives of its residents long after the outside world has changed.

Which factions and creatures recur?
Wasteland politics are local and contested. Groups compete for influence and resources, and games may let players decide whom to support. Bethesda’s show guide names the Brotherhood of Steel, the Enclave and the New California Republic among the factions connected with the series, while New Vegas and Fallout 4 put faction choices into their game stories. Their presence does not mean every title features the same struggle or gives the player identical options.
Other recurring elements give the setting continuity without making every story alike:

- Companions: Characters who travel with the player can provide gameplay support as well as relationships. Dogmeat appears across several games; New Vegas features Rex, a cybernetic dog.
- Regional identities: Boston and the Commonwealth, Appalachia and the Mojave are distinct settings, not parts of one shared game map.
What order do the Fallout games take place in?
The chronology table above gives the in-world order of the major games included in Bethesda’s timeline. It differs from release order, and it is not a checklist you must complete to follow the franchise. Bethesda’s timeline explicitly says, “any Fallout game can be your first.” Choose based on the place or style of story that interests you rather than trying to catch up in chronological order.
Where should a newcomer start with Fallout?
There is no mandatory entry point. These are useful starting choices by setting and format, not a ranking of quality:
| If you want… | Consider… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| The Mojave setting connected to the show | Fallout: New Vegas | Bethesda connects the show’s Season 2 setting to the Mojave and identifies New Vegas as the game set there. |
| Boston and the Commonwealth | Fallout 4 | Bethesda identifies this as one of the franchise’s regional settings. |
| Appalachia and an online world | Fallout 76 | Bethesda describes it as the franchise’s online first and places its opening in Appalachia. |
| The original Southern California story | Fallout | Bethesda dates it to 2161 and describes its Vault Dweller water-chip premise. |
Game availability, editions and platforms vary, so check the current listing for your region and system before buying. Bethesda’s timeline is the source for the dated game sequence; its show guide connects the series to the settings and recurring features discussed here.
