When was the 2026 Met Gala?
The Costume Institute Benefit, widely known as the Met Gala, was held Monday, May 4, 2026, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Met announced the date and event details in its February 23, 2026 release.
The benefit raises the Costume Institute’s primary annual funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and operations, and also supports other Museum activities.
What was the 2026 Met Gala theme?
The official dress code was “Fashion is Art.” The exhibition the gala celebrated was titled Costume Art. The names are related, but they refer to different things: one was guidance for guests, the other the Museum exhibition.

The Met said the dress code invited guests to express their relationship to fashion as an embodied art form and to celebrate depictions of the dressed body throughout art history. It was an invitation for personal interpretation, not a single required outfit or look.
What was the Costume Art exhibition about?
The Met described Costume Art as an exploration of the dressed body’s central place in the Museum’s collection. Garments were to be shown in conversation with works of art from across the Museum’s curatorial departments, examining the relationship between clothing and the body and fashion as an embodied art form.

Scale and galleries
The Museum announced that the exhibition would feature nearly 400 objects and inaugurate the nearly 12,000-square-foot Condé M. Nast Galleries, adjacent to the Great Hall. The new galleries were designed to present the Costume Institute’s annual spring exhibition and could also host exhibitions from other departments.
The exhibition was scheduled to open to the public on May 10, 2026. That announced opening date has passed; the Met announcement does not establish whether the exhibition is currently open or when it closes.
