Star Wars: Starfighter is an upcoming standalone theatrical adventure starring Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon. Lucasfilm lists its release date as May 28, 2027; Disney has placed the story approximately five years after The Rise of Skywalker, while director Shawn Levy says it is neither a prequel nor a sequel.
When does Star Wars: Starfighter come out?
Lucasfilm currently lists Star Wars: Starfighter for theatrical release on May 28, 2027. Director Shawn Levy has said the film is scheduled for the same release weekend as the original Star Wars film’s opening 50 years earlier. The date is the announced schedule; it could change. Lucasfilm’s official film page has the current listing.
Is it a sequel to The Rise of Skywalker?
No—not in the usual sense of a direct continuation. Lucasfilm describes the film as an all-new standalone adventure with new characters in a period not previously explored in Star Wars. Disney’s April 2025 announcement placed it approximately five years after the events of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, but that timeline connection does not make it a direct Episode IX sequel. Levy has described the movie as neither a prequel nor a sequel. Disney’s announcement gives the initial timeline placement; the Associated Press report from Star Wars Celebration records Levy’s description.
What is the story about?
Lucasfilm’s official synopsis reads: “When a cynical rogue is confronted by his mysterious past, he is hurled into a dangerous adventure across the galaxy that puts him on a crash course with destiny.”

At D23 in August 2026, Ryan Gosling identified his character as Kade Auberon and described him as “a guy from the wrong side of the galaxy, whose fate is intertwined with the fastest starfighter ever built.” The official material establishes that connection, but has not identified the starfighter or explained Kade’s past, the central conflict, or how the adventure unfolds. Levy has said the film explores hope, family, and adventure, themes he calls core to Star Wars. Lucasfilm’s D23 update includes Gosling’s description and Levy’s comments.
