In Shannon Carlin’s May 30, 2025, TIME ranking, The Grand Budapest Hotel is Wes Anderson’s best movie, followed by Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums. The list has 13 entries, but it is not a feature-only filmography: it counts the four Netflix shorts collected as The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More as one entry. The order is one critic’s argued ranking, not a measured audience or critic consensus.
How this ranking is scoped
The order below follows Shannon Carlin’s TIME ranking, published May 30, 2025. TIME’s page also displays a “Last updated: July 2026” label, but its effect on the ranking order is unclear; the list is therefore identified here by its publication date rather than treated as a confirmed 2026 revision.
For a feature-only view, Anderson has directed twelve features through The Phoenician Scheme (2025). Criterion’s Wes Anderson collection lists the first ten, from Bottle Rocket through The French Dispatch; the Festival de Cannes filmography also lists Asteroid City (2023) and The Phoenician Scheme (2025) as competition features directed by Anderson. TIME includes those later films and places the four Netflix shorts together as one additional entry.
Every Wes Anderson movie in TIME’s ranking
- 13. Bottle Rocket (1996). Anderson’s feature debut has a looser crime-comedy feel than the elaborate worlds of his later work. Its low placement reflects Carlin’s preferences, not a claim that it lacks the qualities that would become recognizable Anderson trademarks.
- 12. The Darjeeling Limited (2007). Three brothers travel through India while carrying grief and unresolved family tension. Its divisive reputation illustrates how Anderson’s carefully arranged style can either sharpen emotional distance or feel too mannered, depending on the viewer.
- 11. Isle of Dogs (2018). This stop-motion feature builds a distinctive world around a boy searching for his dog. Its crafted visual design is central to its appeal, though the ranking places it below Anderson’s other animated feature.
- 10. The Phoenician Scheme (2025). The newest feature in this ranking lands in the lower third of Carlin’s list. That placement is a critic’s evaluation of the film, not a broad verdict about how audiences have received it.
- 9. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More (2024). This entry groups four Netflix short films into one slot. Read it as a collection in the ranking, not as a single feature-length film.
- 8. The French Dispatch (2021). An anthology built around fictional magazine pieces, it favors self-contained stories and formal invention over one straightforward plot. That structure is part of its pleasure for viewers who enjoy Anderson’s play with form, but can be a hurdle for those looking for a conventional narrative.
- 7. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009). Anderson’s first stop-motion feature turns a family story into a nimble, visually detailed comedy. BFI’s 2015 guide described it as broadly loved, in contrast to the more divisive response it gave some of Anderson’s earlier work.
- 6. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004). Steve Zissou’s underwater adventures carry a melancholy, sardonic tone. Its messier structure and emotional reserve can make it a favorite for viewers who value those qualities, or a less immediate choice for those who want a tighter story.
- 5. Moonrise Kingdom (2012). A bittersweet young romance gives this carefully composed film a direct emotional center. BFI’s 2015 guide noted its rapturous reception at the time, while Carlin’s list places it in the middle of her ranking.
- 4. Asteroid City (2023). A story-within-a-story structure and concurrent theatrical frames make this one of Anderson’s more formally intricate features. That design can reward close attention, but viewers seeking a simple, linear plot may find it less accessible.
- 3. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001). A fractured family story gives Anderson’s stylized compositions a strong emotional counterweight. Its parent-child tensions and loneliness make it a natural choice for viewers drawn to the more affecting side of his work.
- 2. Rushmore (1998). Anderson’s second feature pairs offbeat comedy with adolescent longing and social awkwardness. Its second-place finish puts an early, character-driven film just behind the more formally polished top choice.
- 1. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). Carlin’s top pick combines intricate visual design with a melancholy story and a layered narrative. TIME’s account emphasizes how the framing and visual details serve the film rather than functioning as decoration alone.
What the order says—and what it does not
The ranking favors films where strong design meets an emotional point of entry: grief and loneliness in the earlier work, family strain in The Royal Tenenbaums, and romance in Moonrise Kingdom. It also places highly ambitious structures such as The French Dispatch and Asteroid City lower than the more emotionally direct top three. That pattern is useful for choosing what to watch, but it is an interpretation of one writer’s list rather than a universal formula for Anderson’s best work.
#1 Best Overall
- Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD as well as DVD discs
- Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cord
- Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
- Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
There is room for reasonable disagreement. BFI’s 2015 guide called The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and The Darjeeling Limited divisive, while its writer personally preferred The Darjeeling Limited and the messier construction of Life Aquatic. The guide described Fantastic Mr. Fox as broadly loved and Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel as rapturously received at that time. Those are historical critical perspectives, not a current polling result.
Where to start if you are new to Anderson
- For the most acclaimed entry in this ranking: Start with The Grand Budapest Hotel, Carlin’s number one, for a vivid introduction to Anderson’s framing and visual detail.
- For an emotionally direct family story: Try The Royal Tenenbaums, where parent-child tension and loneliness sit at the center.
- For a tender romance: Choose Moonrise Kingdom and its bittersweet young love story.
- For animation: Watch Fantastic Mr. Fox for family comedy, or Isle of Dogs for a more intricately constructed stop-motion world.
- For formal experimentation: Pick The French Dispatch for linked magazine stories or Asteroid City for theatrical framing and a story-within-a-story.
Is the Criterion Wes Anderson set complete?
The Wes Anderson Archive: Ten Films, Twenty-Five Years is Criterion’s 20-disc 4K UHD and Blu-ray set. Criterion says it contains new 4K masters of Anderson’s first ten features, ten illustrated books, and more than twenty-five hours of special features. It does not include Asteroid City or The Phoenician Scheme, so it is a first-ten-films collection, not a complete current feature filmography. Criterion’s page displays an SRP of $499.95; that is a suggested retail price shown on the product page, not a guarantee of current retailer pricing or availability. See Criterion’s set specifications for the edition details.
