This ranking weighs distinctiveness, promo identity, importance to its promotion, signature matches, and lasting recognition. “Version” means a sustained persona or story presentation—not every appearance or alignment change.
That distinction matters: Hall joined WWE in 1992 as Razor Ramon, while his 1996 WCW return brought him back under his own name. WWE’s career profile traces both presentations.
How the ranking works
The order favors a recognizable character with a meaningful run and lasting identity. It is an editorial ranking, not a measure of audience response or a claim that every fan would choose the same winner. Razor Ramon takes the top spot for his self-contained persona and signature matches; nWo Scott Hall could reasonably rank first in a list focused primarily on faction and industry-story impact.
Every version of Scott Hall, ranked
1. Razor Ramon — the defining solo character
WWE says Hall joined the company in 1992 as Razor Ramon. Gold chains, a toothpick taunt, and a confident, intimidating presence gave the character an immediately recognizable identity. WWE’s retrospective describes Razor as one of the New Generation’s enduring personas and counts Hall as a four-time Intercontinental Champion in its March 14, 2022 account.

#1 Best Overall
- WWE Toy Wrestling Action Figure
The defining match is Razor’s ladder match with Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania X, which WWE identifies as a landmark moment. WWE also points to their SummerSlam 1995 ladder match. The combination of a distinct character and matches that remain central to his legacy makes Razor the strongest overall choice for Hall’s best version.
2. nWo Scott Hall — the faction’s era-defining presence
Hall returned to WCW in 1996 and became a founding member of the New World Order alongside Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan. In the settled nWo presentation, Hall’s black-and-white identity and alliance with Nash placed him at the center of the group’s rebellion against WCW. WWE’s nWo history presents the faction as a major force in the promotion.
Rank #2
- WWE Toy Wrestling Action Figure
This version ranks just below Razor because it is inseparable from the larger faction. If the priority is a character’s part in wrestling’s wider storyline rather than a solo persona, nWo Scott Hall has the clearest case for first.
3. The Outsiders — the invasion mystery
Before the nWo had taken shape, Hall’s unannounced appearance on WCW Nitro on May 27, 1996 began a story built around the suspicion that he and Nash were outsiders from WWE. WWE’s account follows the confrontation with WCW and the transition from that mystery to Hall competing under his own name.
Rank #3
- WWE Toy Wrestling Action Figures
The Outsiders presentation deserves a separate place because it is not quite the same character beat as Hall after Hogan joined the nWo. Its strength is narrative: Hall’s arrival made him a catalyst for the invasion story, rather than simply another member of an established faction.
4. The Diamond Studd — an important prototype
WWE identifies The Diamond Studd as one of Hall’s early WCW personas, before Razor Ramon. That makes the character worth including in a ranking of his sustained versions, but WWE’s official profile provides much less detail about this run than about Razor or the nWo period. Its place here reflects its importance in Hall’s chronology, not a claim that its design or performance can be fully compared from the available account.
Rank #4

5. The 2002 WWE nWo return — a shorter legacy chapter
After WCW closed, Hall returned to WWE with the nWo in 2002 and targeted Steve Austin. WWE records their match at WrestleMania X-8, where Austin won. The return connected Hall to the group’s earlier identity, but it had less time to develop than the peak WCW presentation.
6. Starship Coyote — a documented but obscure early name
WWE includes Starship Coyote among Hall’s early personas, but its profile gives little information with which to assess the character’s run or impact. It belongs in an inclusive list of named versions; there is not enough detail in WWE’s account to justify placing it higher with confidence.

7. Hall of Fame and reunion-era Scott Hall — legacy appearances
This is a retrospective presentation rather than a sustained new in-ring character. WWE inducted Hall as Razor Ramon in 2014 and as an nWo member in 2020. Those honors recognize two distinct parts of his career, but they do not constitute a separate character run in the same way as the entries above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Razor Ramon vs. Scott Hall: why the names matter
Razor Ramon was Hall’s WWE persona, not simply another name for every period of his career. WWE’s chronology distinguishes Hall joining the company as Razor in 1992 from his 1996 return to WCW under his own name. So the answer to “best Razor Ramon matches” points to the Michaels ladder matches; the answer to “best Scott Hall version” depends on whether the reader values a solo character or a story-changing faction role more.
