Every Universe in Invincible Season 2’s Finale Explained

Angstrom’s portals send Mark through a multiverse that puts his fear of becoming like Omni-Man to the test. Here’s what the finale’s clearest comic-inspired worlds mean—and why Agent Spider isn’t Spider-Man.

Spoilers for the Season 2 finale, “I Thought You Were Stronger.”

Mark’s rapid trips between universes are part of his fight with Angstrom Levy, not a pause for a definitive roll call of cameos. The sequence uses alternate realities—and darker versions of Mark—to press on his fear that he could become like his father. The clearest named comic references are Spider-Man, Batman and The Walking Dead, but the show adapts them as inspirations or altered counterparts, not literal appearances by those franchises’ heroes.

Why does Mark travel through so many universes?

Angstrom Levy’s portals make the dimension-hopping possible, and his conflict with Mark gives the montage its dramatic purpose. Skybound’s behind-the-scenes account of the finale frames Angstrom as the anchor for the movement between dimensions. The character’s traumatic origin is also central to the horror surrounding him, as supervising producer and art director Shaun O’Neil describes.

The other Marks work as a dark mirror. In a March 13, 2024 interview with The Ringer, creator Robert Kirkman said the multiverse reveals sides of Mark viewers may not yet have seen. These alternate versions make Mark’s fear of inheriting Nolan’s brutality tangible and sharpen his struggle with Angstrom. Kirkman described the story as “this is really just a character-focused story.”

Which universes and references are identifiable?

Co-showrunner Simon Racioppa named comic dimensions associated with Spider-Man, Batman and The Walking Dead in a 2024 TV Insider interview. His comments support identifying those inspirations, but not treating every glimpse in the fast montage as a confirmed franchise crossover.

Reference What the finale shows or the creators say How to describe it accurately
Spider-Man-inspired dimension The scene features Agent Spider, voiced by Josh Keaton, fighting Omnipotus. Racioppa says rights constraints shaped the television adaptation; he discusses the comic’s Spider-Man-associated dimension in The Direct’s April 4, 2024 interview. Call it Agent Spider or a Spider-Man-inspired world. Spider-Man himself does not appear.
Batman-inspired dimension Racioppa names Batman among the comic dimensions that informed the finale, while joking that Mark does not literally go to Batman’s world in the TV Insider interview. Describe a comic-inspired reference, not a licensed Batman appearance.
The Walking Dead-inspired dimension Racioppa names The Walking Dead among the comic dimensions and separately mentions a zombie world in the TV Insider interview and The Direct interview. Call it an homage or inspired dimension, not an appearance by the franchise’s cast.
Other brief glimpses The interviews do not provide a complete official inventory of every universe in the montage. Specific visual readings beyond the named examples should be identified as observations of the episode, not as a definitive creator-confirmed list.

Was that Spider-Man?

No. It is Agent Spider, a Spider-Man-inspired character, rather than Peter Parker or Spider-Man himself. Racioppa told The Direct that rights constraints affected how the comic crossover material could be adapted for television. Agent Spider’s fight with Omnipotus preserves a nod to the source material without presenting it as a direct Spider-Man appearance.

What do the alternate Marks mean for Mark?

The alternate Marks turn Mark’s anxiety about becoming like Nolan into something he can confront in the story. Rather than serving only as spectacle, they put possible versions of Mark’s violence and domination beside the choices he is making. Kirkman’s explanation in The Ringer points to character exploration as the purpose of this multiverse story; the sequence intensifies the conflict between Mark and Angstrom rather than making Mark a bystander to a parade of cameos.

How does the finale adapt the comics?

The show draws on comic dimensions but reshapes their references for television, including through altered counterparts such as Agent Spider. Racioppa’s interviews with TV Insider and The Direct describe that adaptation distinction. To compare the screen sequence with its source, read the original Invincible comics; Racioppa recommends them as a place to find hints about what comes next.

The production commentary also emphasizes intention in the show’s violence. In Skybound’s April 16, 2024 production feature, supervising producer and director Dan Duncan says, “Just make sure everything you do is done with intent.” That principle fits a sequence where the violence and shifting worlds serve the character conflict.
