Stone Cold Steve Austin had six WWE Championship reigns, totaling 529 days, according to WWE’s reign summary. Ranked by a mix of duration, defining matches and story stakes, his WrestleMania X-Seven reign comes first: it was his longest and began with a major victory over The Rock. The order is an editorial judgment, not a ranking published by WWE.
How the six reigns compare
| Rank | Reign | Duration | Why it ranks here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fifth | 175 days | His longest reign began with a WrestleMania X-Seven victory over The Rock, a defining moment in their rivalry. |
| 2 | First | 91 days | Austin’s breakthrough championship win over Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XIV. |
| 3 | Second | 90 days | A quick recovery after losing the title to Kane, followed by the disputed Breakdown finish and a vacancy. |
| 4 | Sixth | 62 days | A late-career run during the Alliance story, ending in the WWE and WCW title unification sequence. |
| 5 | Third | 56 days | A short 1999 reign in a volatile period for the title story; the cited WWE summary provides no specific defining match or feud detail for this run. |
| 6 | Fourth | 55 days | The shortest of the six by one day, making its placement below the third reign a close editorial call rather than a meaningful difference in quality. |
WWE’s published durations are 91, 90, 56, 55, 175 and 62 days in reign order. They establish the scale of each run, but length alone does not determine the ranking: a shorter reign can carry a more consequential match or story turn.
1. Fifth reign: the WrestleMania X-Seven victory that led the list
Austin’s fifth reign ranks first because it combines the strongest documented duration with an iconic title-change setting. He defeated The Rock at WrestleMania X-Seven to begin a 175-day run, the longest of his career, according to WWE. The win gave a major chapter in their rivalry the WWE Championship as its prize, making this reign a natural choice for the top spot.
2. First reign: the WrestleMania XIV breakthrough
Austin won his first WWE Championship by defeating Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XIV on March 29, 1998. WWE records the reign at 91 days, ending when Kane took the title. Its place near the top reflects the importance of the first championship win in Austin’s rise, rather than a claim that it was longer or more eventful than every later run.

3. Second reign: the disputed Breakdown finish
Austin regained the championship from Kane on Raw the night after losing his first reign. The 90-day run ended at Breakdown in September 1998, when Kane and The Undertaker simultaneously pinned Austin in a triple threat. WWE recounts that the result led to the title being vacated. That unusual outcome gives this reign a clear story consequence and puts it just behind the WrestleMania XIV breakthrough.
4. Sixth reign: the title became part of the unification story
Austin’s sixth reign lasted 62 days and took place during the Alliance storyline. Chris Jericho defeated him at Vengeance on December 9, 2001; Jericho then went on to unify the WWE and WCW championships. WWE’s account of the title change and unification is available in its WWE Championship history. The unification stakes make this run more compelling than its duration alone might suggest.

5–6. The two 1999 reigns: nearly tied and harder to separate
Third reign: 56 days
WWE lists Austin’s third reign at 56 days. That places it just one day ahead of the fourth reign, and the available official summary does not identify a defining match or precise dates for this run. Its rank reflects the documented length and the fact that it belongs to a period when Austin’s title story was volatile, not a claim about an unverified match or feud highlight.
Fourth reign: 55 days
The fourth reign lasted 55 days, according to WWE. It finishes sixth here because it was the shorter of two nearly equal 1999 runs and the documented material offers fewer specific story stakes to distinguish it. The one-day difference is not evidence that it was substantially less important.

What the ranking can—and cannot—settle
The official figures make the fifth reign the clear duration leader, while the 1999 pair are nearly level. Match context makes the top four easier to distinguish: WrestleMania XIV, the Kane rematch, Breakdown’s double pin and the WrestleMania X-Seven win each have a documented anchor. The sixth reign also has a clear endpoint tied to the unification story. The ranking of the two 1999 reigns is necessarily less certain because their cited official summary supplies lengths but no comparable match detail.
WWE also documents the title design associated with Austin’s first championship presentation and the later custom Smoking Skull belt. Its account describes the Smoking Skull design as featuring a skull, smoke and rattlesnakes in place of the traditional eagle and globe, and says Austin alone held that variation: WWE Championship history. That visual distinction is part of the championship’s Austin-era identity, but it does not change the reign ranking.
