Robert Redford directed nine feature films, from Ordinary People in 1980 to The Company You Keep in 2012. This ranking considers direction and dramatic execution, critical reception, lasting reputation, and awards recognition. The order is an editorial judgment, not a definitive scorecard: Redford’s directing credits are established, but no single comparable critic measure covers all nine films.

How this ranking works

This list includes only feature films Redford directed—not films in which he acted or served in another role. That distinction matters because some Redford film rankings combine his directing work with his much larger acting filmography. The ranking weighs performances and ensemble work, pacing, visual storytelling, adaptation, tonal control, reputation, and awards recognition. The top two have the clearest documented awards distinction; placements below them reflect comparative editorial judgment rather than a universal consensus.

Every Robert Redford-directed movie, ranked

  1. Ordinary People (1980)

Redford’s feature directing debut is the strongest choice for number one. Its family drama turns grief, guilt, and emotional distance into a tightly focused story, with controlled performances and an intimate scale. It also has the most decisive awards record among his directing films: the film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Redford won Best Director. Those honors and the film’s enduring standing make it the clearest anchor for this ranking.

  2. Quiz Show (1994)

Redford’s account of the 1950s television quiz-show scandal is his most compelling institutional drama. It follows the consequences of rigged competition beyond the contestants, examining celebrity, ambition, and public trust. Its measured pacing and ensemble performances give the scandal room to unfold as both a character story and a critique of television culture. The Academy nominated it for Best Picture and Redford for Best Director, making it the other especially well-documented awards standout.

  3. A River Runs Through It (1992)

This adaptation of Norman Maclean’s autobiographical novella ranks highly for its visual restraint and sense of place. Redford lets the Montana landscape and the recurring ritual of fly-fishing carry emotional meaning, while the story traces the bonds and strains between two brothers and their minister father. Its reflective approach is less propulsive than Quiz Show, but the quiet form suits a story shaped by memory, family, and what cannot be repaired.

  4. The Milagro Beanfield War (1988)

Redford’s adaptation of John Nichols’s novel shifts into a more openly comic, political register. A small act of defiance—a farmer irrigating a beanfield—becomes a community’s struggle over land, power, and cultural identity. The film’s ensemble and satirical tone distinguish it from Redford’s more intimate dramas. Its broader, sometimes unruly approach is part of its appeal, even if it feels less tightly controlled than the films above it.

  5. The Horse Whisperer (1998)

In this adaptation of Nicholas Evans’s bestseller, Redford directs and stars as a horse trainer asked to help a girl and her injured horse after a traumatic accident. The film’s strongest quality is its patient attention to recovery: the landscapes, work with the horse, and gradual shifts in the characters’ relationships give the story its rhythm. Its expansive romantic drama is less concentrated than Redford’s top-ranked films, but it shows his interest in healing and emotional renewal.

  6. The Conspirator (2010)

Redford’s courtroom drama centers on Mary Surratt, tried in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, and the young Union veteran assigned to defend her. The film’s historical subject gives its central conflict weight: what happens to due process when the public demands swift punishment? Its deliberate pace and restrained presentation suit the material, though the courtroom framework can feel more conventional than the morally unsettled questions it raises.

  7. The Company You Keep (2012)

Redford directs and stars in this political thriller about a former radical whose hidden past is exposed by a journalist. The story moves between investigation, flight, and the consequences of choices made decades earlier. Its subject gives Redford room to revisit questions of dissent and political conviction, but the large cast and shifting strands make it less cohesive than his strongest ensemble work.

  8. The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000)

Set during the Depression, this adaptation of Steven Pressfield’s novel follows a troubled golfer preparing for a high-profile match, with a mysterious caddie offering guidance. Redford uses golf as a frame for a story about confidence, purpose, and finding one’s way back after loss. The fable-like tone and sports setting make it an unusual entry in his directing career; its inspirational symbolism is less subtle than the human dramas higher on this list.

  9. Lions for Lambs (2007)

Redford’s most overtly debate-driven film links a senator’s interview with a journalist, a professor’s conversation with a former student, and two soldiers’ mission in Afghanistan. That structure puts political argument at the center rather than treating it as background to a conventional action story. The approach is direct, but the film’s three strands can feel like separate cases being presented rather than one drama gathering force. Its formal ambition makes it a revealing final entry in Redford’s feature directing filmography, even if it is the least successful as a unified film.
