What are the Modern Family Halloween episodes?
Hulu lists seven Halloween episodes, appearing in Seasons 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 11. The air dates below are listed by the secondary episode guide Modern-Family.tv.
| Rank | Episode | Listed air date | Why it lands here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Season 2, Episode 6 — “Halloween” | October 27, 2010 | Claire’s ambitious haunted-house plan gives the whole family distinct Halloween trouble, including Cameron’s childhood trauma. |
| 2 | Season 4, Episode 5 — “Open House of Horrors” | October 24, 2012 | Neighbors challenge Claire’s elaborate decorations, and Phil’s open-house solution keeps the holiday premise moving across the family’s households. |
| 3 | Season 6, Episode 6 — “Halloween 3: AwesomeLand” | October 29, 2014 | Phil aims for kid-friendly fun; Claire’s competitive streak pushes the decorations toward a much scarier destination. |
| 4 | Season 11, Episode 5 — “The Last Halloween” | October 30, 2019 | Phil’s attempt to scare Claire shares the episode with stories for Gloria, Mitch, Cam, and Lily. |
| 5 | Season 8, Episode 5 — “Halloween 4: The Revenge of Rod Skyhook” | October 26, 2016 | A party-centered plot and Cam’s Halloween nemesis give this entry an energetic, multi-thread setup. |
| 6 | Season 9, Episode 5 — “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Phil Dunphy” | October 25, 2017 | The family wonders whether its Halloween enthusiasm has faded, while a kitchen-remodel conflict adds a separate family tangle. |
| 7 | Season 10, Episode 5 — “Good Grief” | October 24, 2018 | It completes the holiday set, but the available ABC description offers less plot detail than the other entries: costumes, tricks, treats, and unexpected news. |
Which Modern Family Halloween episode is the best?
1. “Halloween” (Season 2, Episode 6)
The series’ first Halloween entry is the best all-around starting point: Claire recruits the family to make the house holiday-ready, but the plan collides with Cameron’s Halloween trauma, Mitchell’s difficult workday, and Gloria’s frustration at being teased about her accent. Claire’s elaborate seasonal instincts and Cam’s old wound give the episode more than one kind of comic friction.

2. “Open House of Horrors” (Season 4, Episode 5)
Claire’s neighbors want her to tone down the Halloween display, an ideal obstacle for someone whose holiday ambition is part of the fun. Phil proposes an open house, while Mitch and Cam host a costume party; Lily’s questions about her birth mother and pregnant Gloria’s temper add other family threads. ABC has also pointed to Claire’s enthusiasm and the couple’s Halloween-house tradition in its Halloween programming coverage.
3. “Halloween 3: AwesomeLand” (Season 6, Episode 6)
Phil takes charge and builds a kid-friendly yard called AwesomeLand, but Claire cannot resist making it scarier when the neighbors start a contest. ABC’s 2014 Scare-Meter feature describes Claire’s turn toward a “Haunted Insane Asylum” and the neighbors’ objection. That sharply defined clash—Phil’s wholesome plan versus Claire’s competitive scare instincts—makes this one especially easy to recommend. Jay’s Shrek and Prince Charming costume thread supplies a contrasting gag.

4. “The Last Halloween” (Season 11, Episode 5)
For the finale-season entry, ABC’s episode description says, “Phil is determined to finally scare Claire on Halloween.” The episode also gives Gloria a story about being mistaken for Jay’s wife, sends Mitch and Cam to the WeHo Halloween Carnival, and follows Lily to her first Halloween party alone. Those parallel plots make it a broader family episode than its central scare challenge might suggest.
5. “Halloween 4: The Revenge of Rod Skyhook” (Season 8, Episode 5)
Luke’s party needs help, Cam faces a Halloween nemesis, and Jay sends Manny to a party at the home of an old enemy. The competing family situations make this a lively ensemble setup, even if its holiday hook is less immediately elegant than the top-ranked episodes. ABC’s 2016 coverage also recalls the show’s established Halloween-house tradition and Cameron’s Halloween trauma.

6. “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Phil Dunphy” (Season 9, Episode 5)
Phil and Claire ask whether the family has outgrown its Halloween enthusiasm—a relatable question for a tradition that has been going for years. Mitch and Cam’s kitchen-remodel conflict with Jay, along with Cam overstaying his welcome with Gloria, gives the episode other family complications, but the holiday’s central idea is more reflective than the top entries’ big comic reversals.
7. “Good Grief” (Season 10, Episode 5)
ABC’s available description establishes a Halloween episode of costumes, tricks, treats, and unexpected news, but does not provide enough plot detail to make a stronger case for its placement. It belongs on a complete rewatch list; for a first pick, the more clearly defined premises above offer an easier choice.

How this ranking works
The order weighs three things: how central Halloween is to the plot, how well the episode uses the wider family, and how distinctive its comic premise is. No reviewed source publishes an authoritative ranking or audience comparison, so the order is a recommendation rather than a claim about consensus.
