The proposed art references in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3’s opening range from The Scream to The Kiss—but they are reported visual parallels, not a checklist confirmed by MAPPA. Director Shota Goshozono has described the opening’s concept as collage: a mix of expressive forms and fragments of generational memory. That framing makes the images easier to read without treating every interpretation as official. Spoiler note: Some character readings draw on Season 3 story context.
Why the opening uses collage
Season 3, The Culling Game Part 1, opens with King Gnu’s “AIZO.” In a statement on the official Jujutsu Kaisen site, director Shota Goshozono explains that characters from different eras are brought together in the Culling Game’s limited arena, where their differences create friction. He says he chose collage as the opening’s concept, bringing together varied forms of expression and fragments of generational memory.
That is the official interpretive anchor—not official confirmation of each painting or print. The artwork matches below are identifications reported by El Comercio, with some additional possibilities discussed by FandomWire. Treat them as useful ways to look at the sequence, not as production-certified inspirations.
Reported painting references and character pairings
Edvard Munch’s The Scream (1893)
El Comercio reads a scream-like image in the opening as an echo of Munch’s famous work and connects it with a premonition of suffering. FandomWire separately associates a scream-like image with Maki’s mother. These are interpretations of the anime image; neither source establishes that Munch’s painting was confirmed as its direct inspiration.

John Everett Millais’s Ophelia (1851–52)
El Comercio proposes that Mai Zenin floating among flowers recalls Millais’s image of Ophelia. Its reading emphasizes the contrast between a tranquil-looking surface and tragedy. The pairing is a compelling visual and character-based comparison, but the thematic link is commentary rather than an explanation issued by Goshozono or MAPPA.
Peter Paul Rubens’s Two Sleeping Children
El Comercio connects sleeping figures in the opening with Rubens’s image and reads them as Mai and Maki together. The comparison sets an image of childhood closeness against the twins’ difficult lives. The scene-to-character identification and its meaning remain proposed readings, not confirmed production notes.

Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss (1907–08)
El Comercio identifies a reinterpretation of Klimt’s embrace with Yuta and Rika; FandomWire also discusses the resemblance. The familiar intimacy of the composition can make the pair’s image feel tender, while their story gives that closeness an unsettling history. That contrast is an interpretation of the anime’s pairing, not a statement about the painting’s intended meaning.
Egon Schiele’s Dead Mother (1910)
El Comercio proposes a connection between Schiele’s work and imagery tied to Yuji’s birth and origins. FandomWire develops a more specific reading involving Kenjaku and an inescapable womb. The latter is an interpretive layer, not a production-confirmed explanation; the safer takeaway is that the opening’s image has been linked by commentators to Yuji’s origin.

Claude Monet’s garden scene with Camille and a child
El Comercio names Camille Monet and a Child in the Artist’s Garden in Argenteuil and pairs its garden imagery with Yaga and Panda. FandomWire uses the shorter title “Camille Monet and a Child.” The scene is a reported parallel, but the exact title and object details have not been verified here against a museum catalogue, so a precise date, collection, or provenance should not be inferred.
Print and poster references with less certain identifications
Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s warrior-print imagery
Commentators have compared poses in the opening to Kuniyoshi’s warrior prints. FandomWire suggests Kashiwade no Hanoshi for one pose and offers another Kuniyoshi print as a possible match for a different one. The exact print identification is disputed in the available commentary; it is more accurate to describe the sequence as reportedly drawing on Kuniyoshi-like warrior imagery than to name either print as settled fact.

Tadanori Yokoo and Y-junction imagery
El Comercio names Yokoo’s “A Dark Night’s Flashing,” while FandomWire refers to a Y-junction work or series. A branching-road motif can invite a reading about diverging paths, but both the precise source title and the interpretation need confirmation. The sources do not establish a definitive match.
