In Brian Silliman’s SYFY Wire ranking, Leprechaun: Origins comes last and Leprechaun in the Hood comes first. It is a ranking of camp and entertainment, not a search for the scariest film: as Silliman puts it, “We’re not going for scares, though, we’re going for fun.”
How this ranking works
The order below follows Brian Silliman’s SYFY Wire list, updated March 15, 2024. It favors comic excess, memorable premises and Warwick Davis’s performance over sustained horror. Treat it as one critic’s taste-based guide: a viewer looking for scares or a conventional slasher may rank the films differently.

The eight Leprechaun movies, ranked
-
Leprechaun: Origins (2014) — worst
SYFY places the reboot at the bottom for trading the series’ familiar camp and Warwick Davis’s leprechaun for a more serious horror tone and redesigned creature. Peacock describes it as unrelated to the earlier installments. That change in direction may suit viewers seeking a more straightforward creature feature, but it is a poor fit for anyone drawn to the franchise’s established comic identity. SYFY Wire’s ranking; Peacock’s series guide.
-
Leprechaun Returns (2018)
This sequel follows the events of the 1993 original while disregarding the other sequels. SYFY credits Linden Porco’s performance and the film’s violent, sometimes scary moments, but finds it less fun than the entries higher on the list. Its continuity is unusually simple for the series: it is a direct follow-up to the first film, not a continuation of the entire run. SYFY Wire’s ranking; Peacock’s series guide.

-
Leprechaun (1993)
The original introduced Warwick Davis as the title character and includes Jennifer Aniston in an early film role. For SYFY, the creature design and Davis’s performance leave a stronger impression than the movie around them. It is the natural starting point for a watch-through, even though this ranking places it below several of the sequels. SYFY Wire’s ranking; Peacock’s series guide.
-
Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood (2003)
The second Hood-set film is more serious than the unruly Leprechaun in the Hood, and SYFY says it does not recapture that earlier film’s chaotic appeal. It also marks Warwick Davis’s last portrayal of the character, according to Peacock. SYFY Wire’s ranking; Peacock’s series guide.

Friday The 13th The Ultimate Collection- Friday the 13th - 8 Movie Collection - Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 3D / The Final Chapter / A New Begin
-
Leprechaun 2 (1994)
The sequel keeps Davis in the role and doubles down on the series’ pun-heavy, deliberately absurd style. SYFY ranks it fourth and recommends it as a group-watch comedy-horror: its appeal is less about dread than about enjoying the jokes and silliness together. SYFY Wire’s ranking.
-
Leprechaun 3 (1995)
Las Vegas gives the third film a ready-made supply of gambling gags, magic tricks and transformation scenes. SYFY praises its full commitment to splatter-comedy and places it third, making it a strong pick for viewers who want the series’ absurdity turned up rather than restrained. SYFY Wire’s ranking; Peacock’s series guide.

-
Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996)
The franchise’s leap into science fiction is the reason to watch this entry: SYFY celebrates its low-budget space excess and outrageous change of setting. Peacock places its story in 2096. Its high ranking reflects the pleasures of a premise that commits wholeheartedly to being strange, not a return to grounded horror. SYFY Wire’s ranking; Peacock’s series guide.
-
Leprechaun in the Hood (2000) — best
SYFY puts the Ice-T and rap-music installment at number one for the entertaining chaos of its unlikely mix of styles. Its jokes and stereotypes may play differently for contemporary viewers, so the top spot is best understood as a camp-comedy judgment rather than an all-purpose claim that it is the franchise’s most frightening or polished film. SYFY Wire’s ranking.

What order should you watch the movies in?
For a straightforward marathon, use release order. The story connections are loose, so it is not necessary to treat the eight films as one seamless continuity: Origins is a standalone reboot, while Returns follows the original and ignores the intervening sequels.

How this critic’s order differs from Tomatometer rankings
A critic’s camp ranking and Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer answer different questions. Silliman prioritizes fun; the Tomatometer aggregates critics’ reviews into a score and is not a measure of audience preference. In a March 18, 2020 Rotten Tomatoes article, four of the eight films had 0%, none exceeded 38%, and the reported mean was 14.125% per film. Those are dated critic-score figures, not current ratings. That article reported Origins at 0% and Returns at 38% at the time. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2020 ranking.
