Later films and Marvel Cinematic Universe stories used different lead actors and different techniques to bring Banner and Hulk to the screen. The five principal performers covered here are Bixby, Ferrigno, Eric Bana, Edward Norton, and Mark Ruffalo—not five actors who each played both characters.
Who played the Hulk in the original TV series?
In the 1977–1982 television series The Incredible Hulk, Bill Bixby played the scientist, named Dr. David Banner in this adaptation rather than Bruce Banner. Lou Ferrigno played the Hulk physically, with green body paint and a performance built around his imposing presence rather than computer-generated imagery. Backstage’s overview of the live-action portrayals describes Ferrigno as originating the live-action Hulk.
The Bixby–Ferrigno version continued in three television films: The Incredible Hulk Returns (1988), The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989), and The Death of the Incredible Hulk (1990). These were continuations of that television adaptation, not new lead recastings. The dates are summarized in the series chronology.

How did Eric Bana describe his Hulk film?
Bana’s 2003 Hulk was its own film iteration, rather than the start of a continuing portrayal across the later Marvel films. In remarks from his WTF with Marc Maron podcast appearance reported by Hindustan Times, Bana said, “I approached it as a one-off.” The report also quotes him saying, “The universe as you know it didn’t exist back then.” Hindustan Times’ report of Bana’s remarks.

Why does “who played Hulk?” have more than one answer?
The answer depends on whether the question means the actor playing Banner, the performer physically portraying the transformed character, or the actor whose performance was captured for a digital Hulk. The television series made that division especially clear: Bixby was Banner and Ferrigno was the physical Hulk. In the 2003 film, Bana played Banner and Hulk, with Ferrigno providing the Hulk voice. Norton played both roles in the 2008 film. In the MCU, Ruffalo plays Banner and contributes the performance used to create the CGI Hulk.
That is why these five performers should not be described as five actors who all played both Banner and Hulk in the same way. Their roles and methods changed across television, standalone films, and the MCU.
