Her interviews offer specific glimpses—such as asking her daughters to help at home and reading with them at bedtime—but not a complete account of the family’s private arrangements.
Why Mendes stepped back from location acting
In an April 2024 interview with Glamour, Mendes described her career shift as a deliberate decision, not an unspoken agreement with Ryan Gosling. “It was very clear to me that I didn’t want to be away from the kids. Acting takes you on location for months. But I still wanted to work,” she said, in remarks reported by The Independent on April 29, 2024.

Her comments describe a preference to avoid extended periods away for location shoots while continuing to work creatively and commercially. They do not mean she permanently stopped working or that one parent took on all caregiving. In an earlier account, she said motherhood redirected her ambition toward home and acknowledged receiving help from her family; that 2019 segment is available from Good Morning America.
Gosling has also spoken publicly about making family a priority. ABC News quoted him in April 2025: “It always comes back to family first. I don’t think I’ll regret anything professionally, but I do think when it comes to Eva and the girls, they come first.” The statement is part of the outlet’s April 18, 2025 family profile.

What Mendes has said about everyday home life
Cooking and cleaning
Mendes has described a practical household split: “Ryan’s the cook. He’s an incredible cook,” she said in an interview with People, reproduced by Glamour on May 13, 2022. “I think that there’s a really nice balance to ‘You cook, I clean.’ And it just works for us.”
She has also described cleaning the kitchen as calming. “Life is so chaotic. But the one thing I can control is my house, my kitchen. So when I do the dishes, it’s meditative for me. It really goes deeper than just cleaning up. It really gives me clarity. Clean sink equals clear mind for me.” In a NewBeauty interview published June 17, 2025, she connected her interest in cleaning to childhood memories of her mother and said that cleaning the kitchen together can be a family bonding activity. These are her personal descriptions, not a prescription for how other families should divide chores.

Including the girls in household tasks
Mendes has said she asks her daughters to take part in household activities and tries to make those tasks a chance to spend time together. In the April 2024 interview, she also discussed talking with them about what she and Gosling lacked growing up, including times when their families lived paycheck to paycheck. Those remarks describe her approach to chores and conversations about money and privilege; they do not establish a complete picture of the couple’s parenting or household responsibilities.
A bedtime routine and a book about worries
Mendes has shared a small bedtime anecdote: one daughter called her “Nighttime Mama” and told her, “Well, Nighttime Mama, you just have to chill your life down at night.” Mendes told Shop TODAY that getting ready for bed generally takes about two hours. The story was reported by TODAY on March 26, 2024; it is an account of their routine, not a general recommendation.

Bedtime reading also connects Mendes’s parenting comments with her children’s book, Desi, Mami, and the Never-Ending Worries, published in English and Spanish in September 2024. The Spanish title is Desi, mami y las infinitas preocupaciones. In an interview with EL PAÍS US on September 23, 2024, Mendes described reading picture books with her daughters at night and the connection that creates. The book follows a child dealing with worries at bedtime; Mendes connected its premise to a daughter’s way of thinking about her own brain and worries. It is a picture book, not a treatment or a claim of clinical benefit.
What Mendes has said about privacy and screens
Mendes has drawn a public boundary around images of her children. ABC News reports that she and Gosling generally do not post their daughters’ photos. In a 2020 response quoted by the outlet, Mendes said she would discuss the children “with limits,” but would not post their images before they could consent. That distinction allows for limited public comments while keeping identifying family photographs private.

A separate set of rules was reported from a specific interview, not confirmed as current policy. In an interview with The Times reported by Harper’s Bazaar on October 21, 2024, Mendes said the girls were homeschooled at that time and were not allowed smartphones or social media at home. She compared unrestricted internet access for a child to letting her walk down the street in the middle of the night. The statements reflect what she said in that dated interview; they do not establish the children’s present schooling or current device rules.

Mendes and Gosling have offered selected comments about work, family priorities, chores, bedtime reading, and children’s privacy. Those accounts do not establish the family’s current home, the girls’ present school arrangements, a complete division of caregiving, or the details of their private relationship. The most reliable way to understand their parenting publicly is as a set of choices and anecdotes they have chosen to share, rather than a full view of life at home.
