In A24’s 2025 film Eternity, Joan faces a choice with no easy answer: spend the afterlife with the partner she shared her life with, or with her first love, who died young and waited decades for her. The film turns that dilemma into a romantic comedy-drama—not a claim about what happens after death.
What is Eternity about?
Directed by David Freyne and written by Freyne and Pat Cunnane, Eternity imagines an afterlife in which souls have one week to choose where they will spend eternity. Joan, played by Elizabeth Olsen, must decide between two relationships that represent very different kinds of love: a long life built together and a first love whose future was cut short.

The official synopsis sets up the conflict without making the decision simple. Joan’s longtime partner represents shared history and the accumulated experiences of a life together. Her first love, played by Callum Turner, died young and waited decades for her, leaving Joan to confront the future their relationship never got to have. What she values most in a relationship—and what she believes should matter forever—is the emotional question at the heart of the premise.
