Spoilers for Season 4 Part 2. Emily’s trip to Rome becomes a new job as well as a romantic adventure: Sylvie appoints her to lead Agence Grateau’s Rome office after the agency lands Italian clients. Emily ends the season happily dating Marcello, while Gabriel decides to pursue her—but the finale cuts away before he reaches her or they reunite.
How does Emily’s trip to Rome end?
Emily wins over Antonia, Marcello’s mother, with a vision for the family business. Agence Grateau secures an Italian espresso client and a six-month contract with the Muratori family’s cashmere fashion house. Sylvie then puts Emily in charge of the agency’s new Rome office. Netflix’s Season 4 recap describes the appointment and the new client work.
Rome is therefore not simply a vacation Emily takes for Marcello. Her relationship with him brings her to the city, but the work opportunity gives her a professional reason to stay. The series’ fictional town of Solitano and the Muratori business are part of the show’s story, not real-world locations or companies.
Does Emily move to Rome permanently?
The finale establishes a Rome assignment, not an irreversible departure from Paris. Emily tells Mindy that the move is temporary. Creator Darren Star also said Emily would have a presence in Rome without the series leaving Paris behind. In a TheWrap interview, Star described the Rome expansion as a way to widen the show’s European setting and explore cultural contrasts among Americans, French people, and Italians.

That distinction matters: Emily has accepted a concrete new role, but the story does not frame her career or life in Paris as finished. Star put it plainly: “Ideally, we’d spend time in Rome and Italy. But definitely we’re not leaving Paris behind.”
Does Emily choose Marcello or Gabriel?
At the end of Season 4, Emily is dating Marcello and appears happy with him. Their relationship is a fresh possibility, while her connection with Gabriel remains unresolved. The season does not give Emily a final, explicit choice between the two men.
Gabriel has earned a Michelin star and realizes he wants another chance with Emily. Earlier, the two had admitted they loved each other, but their relationship faltered amid misunderstandings and the news that Camille was pregnant—a pregnancy later revealed to be false. Gabriel learns Emily has moved to Rome and decides to act, but deciding to pursue her is not the same as winning her back.
Does Gabriel make it to Rome?
No reunion is shown in the Season 4 finale. Mindy tells Gabriel that Emily has gone to Rome. Alfie urges him not to let pride stop him, and Gabriel asks Mindy where Emily is. The scene ends before it shows him arriving in Rome, finding Emily, or speaking with her. The cliffhanger is Gabriel’s decision to pursue her; Emily’s response remains unknown.

What happens to Alfie, Camille, and Mindy?
- Alfie: He and Emily have ended their relationship. Their emotional breakup at Roland Garros is followed by a tender Christmas encounter that confirms the split, even though they still care for each other. Alfie encourages Gabriel because he wants what is best for Emily.
- Camille: After learning she is not pregnant, she tells Emily she intends to adopt a baby on her own. Gabriel is not becoming a father to Camille’s child at the end of Season 4.
- Mindy: Her relationship with Nicolas ends after he gets her disqualified from Eurovision by licensing the band’s song for an advertisement, violating the contest rules. Mindy’s original song, performed in Rome, goes viral.
What the Season 4 ending means
The ending separates Emily’s settled decision from her unsettled love life. She has accepted the Rome role, and Marcello is the person she is dating when the season ends. Gabriel has only begun trying to reach her. The contrast between an established professional move and an unresolved romantic choice is what keeps the finale open rather than delivering a definitive answer about Emily’s future.
Star’s explanation also makes the city change an expansion of the series, not a clean break with its original setting. He told TheWrap: “I had this idea that it would be great to expand the footprint of the show for the European country, and thought Italy was a perfect place to do it,” adding that he liked the idea of cultural clashes not only between Americans and Italians but also between French and Italians.

Season 5 update: what happens after the cliffhanger?
This section discusses events after the Season 4 finale. Netflix’s January 6, 2026 Season 5 ending recap says Emily and Marcello eventually separate because their desires diverge, and Emily returns to Paris. Gabriel’s final Season 5 scene places him on a yacht in Greece, writing Emily a postcard invitation to join him. The series leaves her response unknown. This is the later development of the story; it is not something Season 4 itself shows.
